Happy Death Day 3 Gets Exciting Update From Star & Director 6 Years After Last Installment

Happy Death Day 3 has gotten an exciting update from the franchise director and main star. Helmed by Christopher Landon, 2017’s Happy Death Day was a Groundhog Day-style horror movie wherein a college student gets stuck in a time loop and has to relive the fateful day she gets murdered, over and over again. The movie featured a leading cast including Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, Ruby Modine, and Charles Aitken. The movie was followed up by Happy Death Day 2U in 2019, and a third film was floated.

Speaking at the American Cinematheque (via Bloody Disgusting), Rothe and Landon provide an update on Happy Death Day 3. In a confident statement, Rothe stated that Happy Death Day 3is moving forward.” Landon confirmed this fact, echoing the same statement by saying “it is moving forward.” The director and actor did not say anything as to the production timeline or plot details for the threequel. Check out their full quotes below:

Jessica Rothe: The third movie is moving forward.

Christopher Landon: It is moving forward.

What This Means For Happy Death Day 3

Happy Death Day 3 Has A Complicated History

The development history has been rocky for Happy Death Day 3. Despite the Happy Death Day 2U ending featuring a post-credits tease, Landon said in 2019 that there was no sequel in active development. The conversation then shifted in early 2020, when Jason Blum said that he was pushing for another movie to be made. Still, the progress on Happy Death Day 3 was slow despite Landon revealing some plot details over the years.

After Landon provided a further tease about the film last month, his and Rothe’s statements seem to more concretely confirm that Happy Death Day 3 is going to happen. At this point, it has been six years since a film in the franchise last hit the big screen. In that time, Landon has gone on to make this year’s thriller film Drop, which hits wide release next weekend. Given this history, it does not seem like Landon is in any rush to make Happy Death Day 3, even if the movie is still happening.

Our Take On The Happy Death Day 3 News

Its Release Will Be Spaced Out From A Similar Horror Film

While it is exciting to know that Happy Death Day 3 is finally happening, it is probably good that its release is not imminent. The end of this month will see the release of the video game adaptation film Until Dawn, which has a very similar structure to the films in Landon’s franchise in that it employs a time loop and repeat deaths. As such, it would be good marketing wise for Happy Death Day 3 to be pretty far separated from Until Dawn, so as to avoid confusion between the two films.
