Ke Huy Quan weighs in on the current status of The Goonies 2 amidst rumored creative shuffles, offering an optimistic outlook on the current status of the sequel. The iconic 1985 adventure movie saw a group of friends coming together to find a fabled treasure in order to save their homes, fending off traps and a maniacal criminal family. In The Goonies cast, Quan played Data, the talented young mind of the group whose ambitious inventions help them escape even the most terrifying situations.
While Potsy Ponciroli was reported to be taking on writing duties for The Goonies 2 as returning writer Chris Columbus left the position behind in February, Quan shed more light on the status of the movie when speaking to ET Online. According to the actor, Columbus is still penning the script alongside Steven Spielberg, and the current status of the movie has Quan more optimistic than he had been throughout the movies’ decade-long production struggles. Check out Quan’s full response below:
Well, fingers crossed. We have an incredible writer writing the script. Chris Columbus, Spielberg, obviously, same creative team. Except we’ve been developing for a long time. I want to be optimistic this time around. Hopefully, it will happen soon.
What Quan’s Goonies 2 Writing Update Reveals About The Movie
The Sequel Has Already Faced A Lengthy Period Of Development Help
When looking back on the turbulent and long history of The Goonies 2‘s troubled pre-production, Quan’s update is a welcome clarification. Between resistance and doubt from other Goonies cast members to original director Richard Donner having certain conditions to take the project forward, the director’s pᴀssing in 2021 left many doubtful that a sequel would ever see the light of day. However, prior to the confirmation of the movie entering development, many of the cast members, including Quan and Corey Feldman, were keen on reuniting for a sequel despite the latter’s doubts in the past.
With Quan’s latest response, it seems that Columbus’ role in the production is more involved than the Goonies 2 reports initially suggested. Within the reports of the director’s rumored work with Warner Bros., it was stated that he was only handing in a treatment for a sequel as opposed to a finished script, which would open up the possibility of other writers helping develop his outline. However, with Quan’s latest comments, it appears that Columbus will remain a key part of the movie’s development going forward.
