The next James Bond movie has apparently found its director. It has been four years since the previous Bond movie, No Time to Die, was released, and there has been ample change since. Daniel Craig stepped away from the franchise, while Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli sold Bond‘s creative rights to Amazon. Behind the scenes, everything has changed, and the actor who will officially play 007 still has not been cast. Rumors have swirled about potential options, but none have been confirmed.
The actor may not have been cast, but Amazon seems to have found its director. Twitter user @Simon___Robert, an editor and film distributor, reported that director Alfonso Cuarón is considering signing on to the franchise. At a masterclass event at the Paris Cinéma Club, Cuarón reportedly confirmed that he is in talks with Amazon to lead the first movie in this new era of 007. Check out Cuarón’s translated quote below, (via World of Reel):
There is indeed this project under discussion, and I have a desire — if it happens — to revisit this story in my own way.
What Cuarón’s Involvement Means For The Next James Bond
The Oscar-Winning Director Is On Board
Cuarón did not officially confirm that he will be involved in the movie, as he emphasized that his involvement is still under discussion. He did, however, state that he has interest in signing on, so it is a distinct possibility. If Amazon can complete these negotiations, then it will see the new Bond era begin with a 10-time Oscar-winning director at its head. Cuarón is a prominent director, who is best known for Gravity (2013), Children of Men (2006), and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). His last major work as a director was 2018’s partly-autobiographical Roma.
With such a renowned filmography, securing Cuarón’s involvement would bring significant legitimacy to Amazon’s first Bond movie. Amazon faced backlash after purchasing the creative rights to the franchise in a reportedly $1 billion deal, as concerned viewers have expressed expectations that Amazon will produce multiple Bond-based TV spin-offs. Should an esteemed director sign on, it could ᴀssuage concerns, as the movie division, at least, should maintain its quality.
Our Take On Cuarón’s Bond Role
This Is A Promising Start
Concern and hesitation were only natural after Amazon attained control of the franchise, but this is an excellent first step. The Bond movies were in limbo before the purchase, so Amazon is already moving quickly to secure the best talent in the industry, so that the next movie can finally begin development. If Cuarón does sign on, then he should be able to produce a ground-breaking work, which will help Amazon to prove that it does deserve to control this universe. With James Bond in new hands, Cuarón could be the first director in an all-new era.
