The Naked Gun Reboot: Release Date, Cast, Trailer & Everything We Know

The classic comedy franchise The Naked Gun is getting the modern reboot treatment, and there are already a ton of exciting updates about the new film. Originally released in 1988 and based on the TV show Police Squad!, The Naked Gun follows bumbling detective Frank Drebin and his pals on the force as they try to foil a plot to ᴀssᴀssinate the Queen of England. Created by the legendary Zucker brothers, The Naked Gun‘s humor was a mix of slapstick antics and screwball weirdness, and it was largely anchored by franchise star Leslie Nielsen’s brilliant delivery.

Besides the first film in 1988, The Naked Gun would continue in two sequels throughout the 1990s, though its critical standing would slip with each successive release. Nevertheless, Nielsen’s turn as Frank Drebin helped to further cement his place as one of comedy’s best leading men, and the distinctive Zucker brothers’ absurdist comedy style has yet to be replicated in any era. Despite that, The Naked Gun has long been the subject of sequel and reboot speculation, and it finally seems as if Hollywood has found a project that will finally bring the franchise back to life.

With the summer release date set, the latest news arrives in the form of the first teaser trailer for The Naked Gun reboot. Opening with a tense hostage situation as armed criminals take over a city bank, things take a strange turn as a little girl in a traditional school outfit crosses the police line and enters the building. It was all a ruse, however, and the little girl is actually Frank Drebin Jr. who proceeds to wipe out the criminals.

The teaser then cuts to the precinct where it introduces Neeson’s character as the son of Frank Drebin, who speaks to a portrait of his father and says “I love you.”. Paul Walter Hauser’s character does the same for a portrait of his father, George Kennedy’s Captain Ed Hocken. The trailer ends with Nordberg’s (originally played by OJ Simpson) son looking at his late father’s portrait before shaking his head no.

The reboot is off to a good start in the casting department, and action star Liam Neeson has been tapped to play Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen’s iconic character. Joining Neeson is ’90s star Pamela Anderson, who will play a character named Beth, presumably Drebin Jr.’s love interest. Another new cast member has been added in the form of Blackbird star Paul Walter Hauser, who will play Captain Ed Hocker, originally played by George Kennedy in the classic movies.

Yellowstone star Danny Huston was cast in an undisclosed role in May 2024, and he was quickly joined by Kevin Durand of The Strain fame. YouTube star Liza Koshy was also cast, and WWE superstar Cody Rhodes will also play an as-yet-unknown role. CCH Pounder (Avatar) has joined the spoof film, as has legendary musician-turned-actor Busta Rhymes.
