Viola Davis‘ interest in joining the MCU emphasizes her potential for a role in Marvel Studios’ franchise. James Gunn’s DCU franchise is only beginning to take shape with Creature Commandos and Superman. Hence, many famous and lesser-known actors are joining the DCU in a wide variety of roles. A few DCEU actors are returning in the DCU despite the reboot, mostly playing the same characters. One of these actors is Viola Davis, who returns as the Suicide Squad’s former boss Amanda Waller.
Meanwhile, the MCU is nearing the end of its second three-phase Saga, with more than thirty-five movies and thirteen Disney+ releases so far. Hundreds of characters have been introduced in the MCU over the past seventeen years, many of them played by A-list stars in a one-off or recurring capacity. Still, there are many other Hollywood stars who have yet to join the MCU. While it may seem like most famous Marvel characters have already been claimed, there’s a lot of material available for actors who aspire to play a Marvel role soon.
Viola Davis’ MCU Casting Comments Make It Clear She’d Be More Than Willing To Appear In The MCU
Viola Davis Might Be Setting Her Sights On An MCU Role
Speaking to EW at the G20 red carpet, Viola Davis was asked whether she’d like to play a Marvel character. Davis said she doesn’t know which hero she’d be, but joked she’d like to play “an Iron Man” or “maybe Iron Mania?“ as she and her daughter are fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and they’ve watched all MCU installments multiple times. Few Hollywood stars are openly pᴀssionate about the MCU, and even fewer are both as enthusiastic and talented at the same time.
Viola Davis is unlikely to play an armored hero in the MCU
There aren’t any “Iron Mania” or “Iron Woman” characters in Marvel Comics. There’s Riri Williams a.k.a. Ironheart, who builds her own Iron Man-inspired technology in Tony Stark’s absence, and who’s played by Dominique Thorne in Ironheart. There’s also Pepper Pott’s armored persona Rescue, the masked ᴀssᴀssin Iron Maiden a.k.a. Melina Vostokova (played by Rachel Weisz in Black Widow), and a few other female heroes who temporarily wear similar suits of armor to Iron Man. Hence, Viola Davis is unlikely to play an armored hero in the MCU.
Viola Davis’ Acting History Proves She’d Be Perfect For A Wide Range Of Marvel Roles
Viola Davis Is Known For Playing Strong, Commanding Characters
Viola Davis has built an enviable career throughout the years, earning the exclusive status of EGOT winner (holding an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony). Davis has also played memorable characters, such as the lawyer Annalise Keating in How to Get Away with Murder, the domestic worker Aibileen Clark in The Help, the homemaker Rose Maxson in Fences, the warrior leader General Nanisca in The Woman King, and the government agent Amanda Waller in the DCEU and the DCU. Apart from standout performances by Davis, a common quality of these roles is each of the characters’ unwavering personality.
Viola Davis’ talent for playing strong-willed characters made her an inspired choice for the role of DC’s Amanda Waller, who’s known for intimidating the most powerful DC anti-heroes with her personality alone. While Viola Davis could play a similar role in the MCU, Marvel would benefit more from a different type of character. Davis’ more physical performances in The Woman King and G20 make her a good candidate for physically strong heroes or villains like Shard, Wildstreak, Frenzy, Pathway, Lightbright, Longstrike, Silhouette, and Oya, among others.
I Think Viola Davis Could Perfectly Pull Off Being In The DC Universe & MCU
Viola Davis’ Simultaneous MCU And DCU Roles May Be Possible
Viola Davis is currently playing Amanda Waller in the DCU. Davis’ Amanda Waller led Task Force M in Creature Commmandos season 1, is starring in her own solo DCU series Waller, and is set to return in Creature Commandos season 2. Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller is also likely to make cameos in other DCU projects throughout the Gods and Monsters chapter. Nevertheless, Viola Davis’ DC commitments may not disqualify her from a role in the MCU.
Actors like Frank Grillo, David Harbour, and Chukwudi Iwuji have been able to jump from Marvel to DC seamlessly. Jason Momoa is set to make his DCU debut as Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow only a few years after wrapping up the DCEU in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. James Gunn himself made a seamless transition from the MCU to the DCEU before coming back to wrap up the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise in the MCU and then spearheading the DCU reboot immediately after. If Viola Davis is interested, she could have recurring roles in the MCU and the DCU simultaneously.
