Who Plays Alex In A Minecraft Movie

A Minecraft Movie joins a mulтιтude of video game adaptations, and a predictable formula is brought to Jared Hess’ take on the mᴀssively popular game. First reviews for A Minecraft Movie are dividing audiences and critics alike. The film offers some lighthearted moments, but it didn’t prevent many audience members from immediately spotting the most significant changes from the Minecraft game. Far from simply being set in the Minecraft universe, the story provides a deeper character exploration as Earthling Steve (Jack Black) undertakes a long and challenging journey to escape the Overworld and find his way back home.

The adaptation came as a surprise upon its announcement because, unlike The Super Mario Bros. Movie or similar, the game is well-known for not having a significant storyline, making it a less straightforward choice for a movie. Warner Bros., however, was not deterred and invested a significant $150 million in the film. The cast of A Minecraft Movie consists of Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, and Jennifer Coolidge. The Minecraft film also features some unexpected cameos and familiar voices, with a major one appearing in the post-credits scene. That being said, the actor credited as the newly introduced character, Alex, is not so straightforward.

Kate McKinnon Voices Alex In A Minecraft Movie, But It’s Uncredited

McKinnon Was Reported To Be Joining The Minecraft Cast In 2024

Kate McKinnon was first reported to be part of Minecraft‘s cast in January 2024, in a ᴅᴇᴀᴅline article, which also attached Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords to the project. Despite the report confirming her involvement, there was no indication of what role McKinnon would play. The actress is one of the long-standing members of SNL, and more recently appeared in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, as “Weird Barbie.” McKinnon remains uncredited on IMDb‘s cast list, but there’s no mistaking her voice once you watch the post-credits scene for A Minecraft Movie.

With that in mind, McKinnon has been hesitant to discuss the Minecraft role in previous interviews. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, McKinnon said, when she was asked about her involvement in the adaptation:

I can’t say about any of [A Minecraft Movie], except I will say I’ve seen the animation and I think it is so special, and it looks so incredible. And on the theme of creativity and not losing your creativity, I think it’s going to be an anthem for that. And I’m very excited to see the film.

Based on this, it’s very likely Alex is her role.

Alice May Connolly Was The Body Double For Alex In A Minecraft Movie

Connolly Is Credited For The Role Of Alex In A Minecraft Movie

Although Minecraft‘s key player Alex is voiced by McKinnon, Alice May Connolly is actually credited for the role as “Alex’s double. This is because the post-credits scene is sH๏τ from an opposing perspective, which means the sH๏τ is framed to only show Alex’s back, effectively preventing audiences from seeing Alex’s face for the time being. Therefore, it is not technically McKinnon in the post-credits scene, but rather Connolly’s body, with McKinnon providing the voice. When Steve returns to his old home, the new occupant invites him to retrieve the chest he left there.

Despite being new to theaters, A Minecraft Movie has a strong potential for a profitable release.

She introduces herself to Steve by saying: “You wanna come in? I’m Alex, by the way.” Alex is one of Minecraft‘s default players, and can often be seen with the film’s protagonist, Steve. The post-credits scene lays the groundwork perfectly for a sequel to A Minecraft Movie, and despite being new to theaters, the feature has a strong potential for a profitable release. Judging by the considerable online attention the movie has received, coupled with A Minecraft’s Movie‘s rapid breaking of a box office record for video game adaptations upon release, a sequel seems like a certainty for the future.
