A Minecraft Movie has broken a box office record before the end of its first full day in theaters. The feature, which follows a group of people trapped in the iconic тιтular video game, stars Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen. Ahead of the Minecraft Movie release, the Jared Hess-directed project broke a record by having the most pre-sale ticket purchases of any PG-rated movie in 2025 so far.
Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, A Minecraft Movie has earned the best preview total for a video game adaptation in history by taking in $10.55 million at the domestic box office on Thursday night. This bests the $10.3 million earned by Five Nights at Freddy’s in 2023. However, it is important to note that 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time with $1.362 billion worldwide, did not have preview screenings because it opened midweek on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, ahead of that year’s Easter weekend.
What This Means For A Minecraft Movie
It Still Has Hurdles To Overcome
Breaking this record does not automatically mean that A Minecraft Movie is going to become one of the highest-grossing video game movies of all time. While Five Nights at Freddy’s previously held that record, it is only the 13th highest-grossing, with a worldwide haul of $297.1 million. However, the horror game adaptation debuted on the same day as its Peacock streaming release and had a catastrophic week 2 drop of 76.2%, potentially because of the fact that its opening weekend was over Halloween, after which point general interest in horror can capsize for the next few weeks.
Five Nights at Freddy’s still had a huge return on investment, as it only cost $20 million.
The 2025 movie does not have the same limitations as Five Nights as Freddy’s, which could help it succeed over a longer period of time and climb quickly up the chart. This would be in its best interest, as the Minecraft Movie budget is reportedly $150 million. Because movies typically need to earn two and a half times their production budgets in order to turn a profit, this most likely places the movie’s break-even point at $375 million or more.
