The first teaser trailer for The Naked Gun has arrived. The upcoming movie is the fourth feature-length installment in the spoof franchise, which previously starred Leslie Nielsen as bumbling policeman Lieutenant Frank Drebin, a character who was introduced in the short-lived comedy series Police Squad!. The upcoming The Naked Gun, which was produced by Seth MacFarlane and directed by Akiva Schaffer, stars Liam Neeson as the character’s son, Frank Drebin Jr., opposite a cast that also includes Paul Walter Hauser, Kevin Durand, Liza Koshy, Danny Huston, CCH Pounder, Cody Runnels, Busta Rhymes, and Pamela Anderson.
Paramount Pictures has now released the official trailer for the Naked Gun sequel starring Liam Neeson. The trailer opens on a seemingly serious note, with a S.W.A.T. team responding to a hostage situation at a bank. However, a little girl with a lollipop walks into the building before ripping off her mask and revealing herself to be Frank Drebin Jr. He then uses the sharpened lollipop to violently dispatch the armed men before introducing himself as a member of “police squad… the new version.”
The trailer then ends on a comic setpiece where Drebin speaks to a framed portrait of his father saying, “love you.” This is followed by a man expressing similar sentiments to a portrait of his father, George Kennedy’s original character Captain Ed Hocken. This concludes with the son of O. J. Simpson’s character Detective Nordberg shrugging and not saying anything. Watch the trailer below:
What This Means For The Naked Gun
The Movie’s Comedy Stylings Have Gotten Their First Major Showcase
Ultimately, it remains to be seen how the rest of the new installment in the iconic comedy franchise shapes up, as this minute-long teaser for The Naked Gun only showcases one major scene. So far, there has been little indication of what the overarching plot of the movie will be or insight into the character played by Pamela Anderson, who does not appear in the clip.
Pamela Anderson was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in 2024’s The Last Showgirl.
However, if the Liam Neeson movie takes after the scene showcased in the trailer, it seems clear that The Naked Gun will endeavor to retain the absurdism of the original trilogy, which ran in theaters between 1988 and 1994. However, it also blends this with a more modern style of action filmmaking, with the scene that is being subverted exhibiting a much a higher level of intensity than any of Drebin’s adventures in the original movies.
Our Take On The Naked Gun Trailer
Liam Neeson Is A Good Fit For The Franchise
Another important aspect of The Naked Gun that the trailer does showcase is the performance by Liam Neeson. So far, he seems to be a perfect fit for the role, carrying on the legacy of Leslie Nielsen’s approach to comedy, which is that he played his characters with a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly seriousness that allowed the absurdity around them to feel even more ludicrous in juxtaposition.
