Vincent D’Onofrio opens up about whether Kingpin could pop up in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and finally take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe hero. As Wilson Fisk is currently gaining more power than ever in Daredevil: Born Again, Kingpin’s return to the MCU timeline is getting him closer to potentially facing off with one of his other Marvel enemies – Peter Parker, who has a long history with the villain in the comics. Even though Tom Holland can’t appear in the series, he is getting ready to reprise the role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with production starting this summer.
During his appearance on Happy, Sad, Confused, D’Onofrio was asked about the possibility of Kingpin finally crossing into the MCU films, specifically Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as many fans have been waiting to see the two Marvel rivals face each other. However, as much as D’Onofrio wants to see it happen, the MCU alum confirmed that Kingpin is caught up in legal rights issues at Marvel Studios, sharing the following:
The only thing I know is not positive, it’s a very hard thing to do for Marvel to use my character. It’s a very hard thing to do because of ownership and stuff. Right now, I’m only usable for television series, different kinds of series, whatever it is, but not even a one-off Fisk movie or anything like that. It’s all caught up in rights and stuff. I don’t know when that would work out, or if it would ever work out at all, actually, really…
What Vincent D’Onofrio’s Spider-Man 4 Comments Mean
While Spider-Man: Brand New Day story details remain under wraps, there has been major interest from the MCU audience in seeing Peter have a more street-level story after his initial trilogy. Given the current direction of Daredevil: Born Again season 1, Peter and Fisk’s paths crossing is more organic than ever, but based on D’Onofrio’s comments, it’s up to the studio to decide where he falls into the movie side of the MCU. As far as why Marvel and Sony Pictures haven’t wanted to utilize Kingpin in the Spider-Man movies, that’s the bigger mystery.
But what D’Onofrio’s comments also reveal is that Marvel may be hesitant to use Kingpin in the MCU movies, which makes things tricky to have Fisk dealing with other characters unless they come to Daredevil: Born Again. Even if Kingpin is not in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it wouldn’t be shocking if perhaps a potential Spider-Man 5 brings them together, especially if Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios can come to an agreement where D’Onofrio can reprise his character. But it’s clear that D’Onofrio wants the Kingpin/Spider-Man dynamic as much as fans do.
Our Take On Vincent D’Onofrio’s Spider-Man 4 Comments
While it’s helpful to have the full picture of why Kingpin hasn’t appeared in any MCU movies yet, it does make things more frustrating, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day would be the proper time to finally have Peter deal with Fisk. Given how Daredevil: Born Again season 1 is dealing with how Fisk is going after vigilantes and heroes in New York, Spider-Man is bound to be affected by his actions sooner rather than later. But while Kingpin may not be in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, fans can keep tuning in to Daredevil: Born Again season 1 on Disney+.
