James Gunn reveals how he honored the Man of Steel’s movie and comic book legacy with multiple Superman cameos that DC fans may appreciate. Unlike many Superman movies and shows, James Gunn’s Superman won’t center around Kal El’s origin story and early years. Instead, Superman will focus on the Kryptonian’s efforts to change the way the world sees superheroes. Many DC characters will make their big screen debut in Superman, including Metamorpho, Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific. However, James Gunn’s Superman will also honor the Man of Steel’s roots.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Superman director James Gunn addresses Will Reeve’s Superman cameo, as well as the brief appearance of Jerry Siegel’s grandchildren in the 2025 DCU movie. Gunn also revealed that he brought “all the living comic book artists and writers of Superman over the past forty years” to the Superman set. Read James Gunn’s full comments below:
“We not only had Will Reeve on set, but we also had Jerry Siegel’s grandchildren in the Daily Planet, so it was really cool to be attached to the actual legacy of this wonderful character and have that be a part of who we are. We had all the living comic book artists and writers of Superman over the past forty years come to set, and they sat on set with us Those guys were, like, crying.”

James Gunn’s Superman Will Acknowledge The тιтular Character’s 87-Year-Old Legacy
James Gunn’s Superman will be the face of a new DC franchise, not only on the big screen, but also on streaming and in animation. Gunn’s Superman headlines the DCU reboot as dozens of new portrayals of DC characters make their debut and star in their own projects. But while Superman signals the beginning of a new era, James Gunn’s movie also acknowledges everything that came before it with homages to icons like Christopher Reeve and Jerry Siegel — the most emblematic Superman actor and Superman’s co-creator, respectively.
Back when it was in production, James Gunn’s Superman was тιтled Superman: Legacy. Whether Superman‘s script changed significantly after dropping the “Legacy” subтιтle is unknown, but the movie’s homages to Superman’s origins were probably planned from the start and likely remained intact throughout development. Apart from Superman‘s cameos, Superman will probably reference other key parts of Superman’s 87-year-old history through easter eggs, gags, and lines of dialog that die-hard DC fans and comic book aficionados may pick up on.
Our Take On James Gunn’s Comments About Superman’s DC Legacy References
James Gunn’s Superman Is The Perfect Place To Honor Superman’s Legacy
The DCEU met a premature ending with little fanfare in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and Superman & Lois gracefully ended a 24-year era of Superman on television with a self-contained story. Now, James Gunn’s Superman launches a whole interconnected universe that promises to evolve for the next decade, at the very least. There’s no better way to celebrate this new beginning than taking some time to honor Superman’s rich movie and comic book legacy.
