Jon Bernthal Offers Update On The Punisher MCU Spinoff And How Important It Is To Him: “Frank Is In My Bones, Is In My Heart”

Since Frank Castle will soon be getting his own project again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jon Bernthal shares a new update on The Punisher’s future in the franchise. With Daredevil: Born Again season 1 ushering Matt Murdock back into the MCU as a core player, the Disney+ drama has also finally given The Punisher another go in the franchise. But Marvel Studios is only just getting started with Bernthal’s Frank, as it was revealed earlier this year that The Punisher will get a spinoff from Daredevil: Born Again.

In a new interview with Collider, Bernthal was asked about the progression of his upcoming The Punisher spinoff, which will be the next MCU Special Presentation from Marvel Studios. With Bernthal set to be involved both as an actor and creative in the project, which is also being co-written and directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, the MCU alum teased the following about Frank’s solo project:

I’ve said it a million times: Frank is in my bones, is in my heart. I care about him. In discussing what this thing could be and this sort of version of Frank that I really felt that the audience was hungry for, that the military community was hungry for it, the first responder community, the comic book fans, they were really hungry for it. I presented that version to them, and they encouraged me. They encouraged me to keep coming to the table.

As we were talking with different writers, the ideas that we were coming up with started to resonate, and I think they saw how much they resonated with me. I got a great group of vets that I work with. One in particular, my friend Nick, he’s just been incredible. I hope that it goes alright. I don’t like talking about these things because it’s a little bit of bark before there’s a bite, you know? I’m honored and I’m grateful. It’s an incredible group of people that we’re ᴀssembling.

What Jon Bernthal’s MCU Punisher Spinoff Update Means

While Daredevil: Born Again season 1 has only scratched the surface of Punisher’s second chapter in the MCU timeline, it’s clear that Bernthal is ready to get even deeper with Frank now that his character is part of the overall franchise. Ever since Bernthal was cast as the iconic Marvel antihero, he has stressed numerous times how important this character is to him, but also to folks in the world, which is why he takes it so seriously. That explains why it’s a huge deal that Bernthal is also directly involved with the MCU’s Punisher Special Presentation.

It’s only fitting that Bernthal is finally getting to have a direct creative impact on Frank’s story, given how well-received his portrayal of Punisher has been ever since his introduction. From what Bernthal is teasing, the MCU Special Presentation is clearly looking to elevate crucial aspects of Punisher, while also extending his mythology. Whether Daredevil: Born Again season 1 will have any direct setup for it remains to be seen.

Hearing how pᴀssionate Bernthal is about Punisher’s MCU Special Presentation, it will be exciting to start seeing more updates about the spinoff over the next couple of months. Given how it is already targeting a 2026 premiere on Disney+, there’s bound to be casting news and story details sooner rather than later as they get ready to start filming. However, before the MCU can get to its Punisher spinoff, fans will have to keep watching the rest of Daredevil: Born Again season 1 to see if any clues are left for Frank’s 2026 return, as there are only two episodes left of the season.
