How To Train Your Dragon 2 Announcement Helps Put An End To The Live-Action Remake Controversy

Ahead of the release of the first live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake, a remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2 has already been announced, putting an end to the series’ biggest controversy. Although the animated How to Train Your Dragon movie series ended with the release of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, the franchise is living on with the release of DreamWorks’ upcoming live-action remakes. Although there is a lot of skepticism around the first How to Train Your Dragon remake, the announcement of a sequel proves that DreamWorks has high hopes.

The plethora of Disney live-action remakes that have been coming out for more than a decade now have been hugely successful, causing other studios to look at the trend. Now, DreamWorks is hopping on board, with 2025’s How to Train Your Dragon being the studio’s first live-action remake. As is the case with the Disney live-action remakes, 2025’s How to Train Your Dragon has been mᴀssively controversial, with the announcement of a sequel leaving many fans scratching their heads.

How To Train Your Dragon 2’s Confirmation Means Universal Believes In The Live-Action Movies’ Success Despite Casting, CGI & Story Complaints

DreamWorks Is Confident In The Remakes

Screen Rant is in attendance at CinemaCon 2025, with DreamWorks making a mᴀssive announcement at the Universal Pictures panel. Universal used CinemaCon to announce that How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be getting a live-action remake, with it having a scheduled release date of June 11, 2027. This is surprising, as the announcement comes before the reveal of what the critical and box office reception of the first film will be like. This bold move signals that Universal has immense confidence in 2025’s How to Train Your Dragon.

This confidence is surprising, as there have been a lot of complaints surrounding the 2025 remake. How to Train Your Dragon‘s casting, CGI, and story complaints have been at the center of many conversations surrounding the upcoming remake. The remake being too similar to the original film is a huge concern, but despite these issues, DreamWorks seems to be moving ahead with future films anyway.

How To Train Your Dragon 2’s Two-Year Gap Is Another Great Relief

Universal Has Time To Learn From The First Movie

Although the turnaround time between the first remake and How to Train Your Dragon 2 may seem short, the two-year gap is another great relief. Since How to Train Your Dragon 2 doesn’t come out until 2027, this means that Universal and DreamWorks have time to gauge the reaction to the first film. Then, they can make the appropriate changes to the sequel without having to rush reshoots or revisions.

This is the correct path to go, as it wouldn’t be smart to make adjustments based on criticisms of the trailers. General audiences haven’t seen the live-action How to Train Your Dragon yet, and DreamWorks needs to let the remake speak for itself before worrying about the sequel.
