Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars Movie Is Still In The Works, Writer Confirms: “Something I’ve Dreamed About My Whole Life”

Jonathan Tropper has confirmed that Ryan Gosling’s upcoming Star Wars movie is still in the works. It’s been six years now since Star Wars hit the box office, and we won’t be returning to the galaxy far, far away on the big screen until 2026’s The Mandalorian & Grogu. But Lucasfilm is known to have a number of upcoming Star Wars movies in the works, including a project by Shawn Levy.

Speaking to Collider, the writer of Levy’s movie – Jonathan Tropper – confirmed it’s still in development.

That gig is something I’ve dreamed about my whole life. We’re still working on it. For various reasons, I can’t say anything about it. But we’re working on it.”

The comment comes after rumors that filming will begin later this year, with Ryan Gosling in talks to appear in an unknown role.

We Don’t Know Much About Shawn Levy’s Star Wars Movie Right Now

Levy’s career is going from strength to strength after the phenomenal box office success of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine. We don’t know much about Levy’s Star Wars movie right now; the director has hinted that it’s a standalone, and Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy recently revealed its place in the timeline, apparently five years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. There have been rumors that Daisy Ridley’s Rey will appear.

The potential star casting of Gosling is unusual for Lucasfilm, a studio that doesn’t typically focus on star power in lead roles. This may reflect a recognition that the Star Wars brand has been underdeveloped on the big screen of late, meaning it needs the boost. Frustratingly, there’s no Lucasfilm Studio panel at this year’s Star Wars Celebration, so it may well be quite some time before we get any real news.

Our Take On Shawn Levy’s Star Wars Movie

The most important question here, of course, is just how Shawn Levy’s new Star Wars movie will develop Ridley’s Rey – should she appear. Lucasfilm announced Ridley’s return at Star Wars Celebration London back in 2023, but development of Rey’s New Jedi Order movie has been slow, and there have been repeated reports the studio is developing other plans for the character of Rey. A setting five years after The Rise of Skywalker would be perfect for this.

Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy recently complained about the Star Wars fandom’s relentless focus on development, insisting that studios need the room to experiment and explore. That said, she seems very focused on Levy’s Star Wars movie, and there have been rumors it’s next; Gosling alone brings enough star power to make this particularly exciting. ScreenRant will keep you updated as more news emerges.
