Live-Action How To Train Your Dragon 2 Confirmed, Gets 2027 Release Date

A live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2 has been announced, with a 2027 release date revealed ahead of the first remake’s theatrical debut. The upcoming How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake is a retelling of DreamWorks Animation’s 2010 movie of the same name. Much like the original, the live-action remake focuses on a young Viking named Hiccup (Mason Thames) who befriends a Night Fury dragon he names Toothless. The movie arrives in theaters on June 13, 2025, but first reactions after its premiere at CinemaCon are already giving it high praise.

ScreenRant was in attendance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where Universal Pictures announced that a live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be arriving in theaters on June 11, 2027. The film and its release date were announced onstage by Dean DeBlois, who wrote and directed every movie in the franchise, including the new live-action rendition. What How To Train Your Dragon 2 Means For The Franchise

Live-Action Remakes Can Provide A New Experience

It’s bold of Universal to already have a release date planned for another live-action remake in the fantasy franchise. Given the success of the original How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, though, it appears the studio is confident in its transition to live-action. While nothing is known about the sequel, it’s safe to ᴀssume that it will follow the same story as the original, which sees Hiccup discovering the whereabouts of his mother, while he and Toothless protect their home, the Isle of Berk, from a new threat.

The quick pace at which the live-action sequel was confirmed indicates intentions for the franchise to keep growing through its new medium. With the next installment coming out almost exactly two years after the first, the studio appears poised to keep recreating the familiar stories the DreamWorks Animations originals told. Luckily, this also means the potential for new details and ideas to be added as well, while maintaining How to Train Your Dragon‘s iconic moments as well.

A Bold Move That Shows More Promise For The First Movie

Given the overwhelmingly positive reactions the first live-action movie has gotten out of CinemaCon already, a remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2 is the logical next step for the franchise. While the box office of the first remake is going to be a key factor in how the series moves forward, Universal’s confidence in announcing the sequel so early is a good sign for the remakes. It also hints at their possible intention to remake the whole trilogy, something that could happen now that the first sequel has been confirmed.
