New footage has offered major insight into M3GAN 2.0. The Blumhouse horror movie sequel follows the 2023 smash hit, which introduced the тιтular killer robotic doll as she befriended Cady (Violet McGraw) the young niece of programmer Gemma (Allison Williams), but became lethally overprotective of her. The upcoming M3GAN 2.0 features the return of all three characters as well as director Gerard Johnstone and screenwriter Akela Cooper, who co-wrote the new movie with Johnstone.
ScreenRant was in attendance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where Blumhouse presented new footage from M3GAN 2.0 as part of Universal’s presentation of their upcoming movie slate. Below, read a description of the footage, which is not available online:
The teaser begins with clips from the first movie. Then we see M3GAN waking up as what looks like a Teletubby. Gemma says they brought her back in that body until they could trust her.
At this point, a new robot was somehow created, named Amelia, who is built using M3GAN’s design, and apparently nothing can stop her. She’s now gone rogue and is killing everyone who was involved in her creation, which now means Gemma and Cady. Megan convinces Gemma to rebuild M3GAN’s original body so she can fight Amelia – even upgrading her to be stronger, faster, and taller.
At one point, M3GAN flies using a wing suit. Lots of action scenes ensue, including several fights between her and Amelia. M3GAN makes several jokes and she has multiple one-liners. “Hold on to your vaginas,” M3GAN says, as well as “I’ll make you a deal. You can kill Gemma, but don’t touch Cady.”
What This Means For M3GAN 2.0
It Draws Inspiration From Terminator 2
From this footage description, it seems quite clear that M3GAN 2.0 will lean in on the comedy element that was already present in the original Blumhouse movie. This included scenes such as a creepy but humorous moment where M3GAN sang “тιтanium” to Cady as a lullaby.
Another comic setpiece in M3GAN is the тιтle character’s pre-murder dance, which went viral ahead of the movie’s release.
Additionally, the 2025 horror sequel will pay homage to another sequel about an iconic killer robot, 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day. That movie saw a new model of the formerly menacing Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) being called upon to protect Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and her son John (Edward Furlong). However, the final line of the M3GAN 2.0 trailer implies that she may not be as morally upright as the iconic Schwarzenegger character.
Our Take On The M3GAN 2.0 Trailer
Maintaining Its Tone Could Be Complicated
Ultimately, it remains to be seen if the horror-comedy approach of M3GAN 2.0 is as successful a second time. By trying to recreate the viral success of the original, it may focus too hard on comedy and end up undermining its scares. However, the fact that M3GAN’s character is morally ambiguous could help fuel the movie’s horror aspect and make it a success in spite of its potential hurdles.
