Why A Minecraft Movie’s Reviews Are So Mixed

The reviews for 2025’s A Minecraft Movie are divisive, and many critics have cited the same pros and cons. Based on the beloved IP that’s rated #3 on ScreenRant’s list of the best video games of all time, the idea of a Minecraft adaptation was confusing from the start, immediately receiving criticism for being a cash grab trying to ride off the success of recent video game тιтles like The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The Minecraft game famously doesn’t have a story, so it’s not as ripe for adaptation as, say, The Last of Us or God of War.

That said, crazier things have happened in Hollywood, and тιтles like Jumanji and Tron are proof that any game can be brought to life in a compelling way. Warner Bros. pulled no punches in its adaptation of one of the world’s most famous games, with a budget of $150 million. A Minecraft Movie’s cast features all-star actors Jack Black (School of Rock, Kung Fu Panda) and Jason Momoa (Aquaman), and a significant portion of the film is animated, bringing to life iconic elements from the game.

A Minecraft Movie Has Divided Critics As Being Fun Or Bland IP

The Film’s Humor And Charm Are Hit Or Miss

The Minecraft movie adaptation has received an expressly divisive response from critics, with the general difference being over whether the film’s charm and humor landed. Of course, these are subjective aspects, and they’ll hit or miss depending on the audience. ScreenRant’s review gave the film a 4/10 score, citing shallow characters, mediocre storytelling, and lackluster humor as the movie’s primary faults.

Other reviews communicate the polar opposite, suggesting that A Minecraft Movie is hilarious and lives up to the boundless imagination the video game is known for. Some pages claimed that their experience was joyful and filled with laughter. Though no one is claiming that the video game adaptation is a masterpiece, there seems to at least be a significant portion of its reviewers who enjoyed the silliness of the тιтle. For a film largely targeted at younger audiences, this might do the trick and provide WB the box office hit they hoped for.

Jack Black & Jason Momoa’s Performances Are Praised, Even In A Minecraft Movie’s Bad Reviews

There appears to be one optimistic through-line existing in both the positive and negative reviews: Jack Black and Jason Momoa are enjoyable. It’s no surprise that one of the most popular comedic actors of all time and one of the decade’s most charming movie stars would be a compelling combination. Jack Black succeeds with his usual shtick, which could be an indicator of how one might react to the film, but critics also suggest Jason Momoa fully embraces a new side of his acting capabilities in A Minecraft Movie.
