Footage for Mercy has been shown at CinemaCon. The cast of the upcoming science-fiction thriller movie is led by Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson, with the story following a detective who must prove his innocence after being accused of a crime. The Amazon MGM movie is directed by Timur Bekmambetov, who previously directed the 2008 action thriller movie Wanted starring James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie, and Morgan Freeman.
At Amazon MGM’s CinemaCon panel, where ScreenRant was in attendance, a trailer for Mercy has now been shown. The trailer reveals a futuristic society, with Ferguson’s character explaining that the Mercy program can determine whether a person is guilty or innocent of a crime, and if the individual is found guilty, they will be executed. Pratt’s character has 90 minutes to prove he is innocent of his wife’s murder, or he will otherwise be killed. Check out the description of the footage below:
The trailer begins with Chris Pratt in a chair, with Rebecca Ferguson’s character on a big screen in front of him. She explains how the Mercy program acts as judge, jury, and executioner, and that Pratt’s character is charged with the murder of his wife. He has to prove his guilt falls below the 92% threshold, or he will be executed in 90 minutes. He has to gather evidence from various sources to prove his innocence. He uses the technology to recreate the scene to try to discover who killed his wife. We see him looking through text messages, video footage, etc. In doing so, his guilt rises to 98%, which he vehemently denies. He then contacts his daughter and looks through her videos. At that point, he discovers that someone was in his house – the person who potentially killed his wife. Most of the trailer is focused on Pratt in a chair and Ferguson on a screen talking to each other about the case and his guilt. The teaser ends with the timer counting down.
What This Means For Mercy
The Premise Is The Movie’s Greatest Selling Point
Mercy‘s premise includes a built-in sense of urgency as the timer counts down from 90 minutes, and Pratt’s character races against the clock to prove his innocence and save his life. Despite the inherent anxiety of the situation, he has to keep his guilt below a 92% threshold, and is monitored the entire time by the Mercy program. Ferguson’s character will represent Mercy, along with providing some of the exposition necessary to understand the world-building of the dystopian movie’s story.
Our Take On The Mercy Footage
Mercy Will Be A Must-Watch Movie
Mercy‘s concept sounds fascinating to me and caught my attention more than anything else shown during the Amazon MGM panel. The protagonist having to prove their innocence in 90 minutes or less to a program that acts as judge, jury, and executioner is a compelling concept. While Pratt’s projects can be hit or miss in terms of quality, Ferguson’s movies and shows always impress, and it sounds like she is part of a promising story in Mercy.
