The Marvel Cinematic Universe has long been rumored to feature the character Mephisto, and I’m shocked that the franchise was able to tell one of his most popular stories without involving the character himself. Agatha All Along finally confirmed Mephisto’s existence in the MCU in 2024, although Marvel’s version of the devil has not yet made an onscreen appearance in the franchise. With several projects ahead that are rumored to feature the character, I believe it’s only a matter of time before he finally shows up in an MCU project.
So many ideas concerning Mephisto, including theories from Agatha All Along, have suggested that the character is already in the franchise, making trouble behind the scenes. This would make sense for the Faustian demon, who debuted in Marvel Comics in 1968. The villain has been a notable adversary for characters like Ghost Rider and Silver Surfer for many years. More recently, Mephisto has become a prominent Spider-Man villain and has become wound up in stories concerning Mary Jane, the Green Goblin, and Spider-Man’s future daughter, Spider-Girl.
Mephisto Has Been The Subject Of MCU Fan Theories For Many Years Now
Many Expected The Villain To Be Behind The Events Of WandaVision
WandaVision‘s surreal plot and mysteries incited a lot of the initial discussions about how Mephisto might debut in the MCU, and Mephisto theories have continued to pop up every now and then since. Many believed, before it was revealed that Wanda was behind the transformation of Westview, that Mephisto would be revealed to be behind the illusion. Even after Wanda’s responsibility was shown, many still clung to the idea that Mephisto was secretly influencing her actions. Since then, saying “Mephisto Confirmed” in discussions about the MCU has become a running joke.
Some believed Mephisto would be revealed in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, due to its connections to Wanda, and when Agatha All Along was announced, it was speculated that the character could appear in the Disney+ show. Most importantly, when details began to come out concerning the story of Spider-Man: No Way Home, many believed that Mephisto could make his debut there. With a look at the comic book stories that inspired the film, I’d argue that theory actually made a lot more sense than any of these other suggestions.
The MCU Avoided Featuring Mephisto In Its Adaptation Of One Of His Biggest Comic Moments
Spider-Man: No Way Home Drew Influence From The Comic One More Day
“One More Day” was a 2007 comic book story that received a great deal of criticism upon release, but many of its elements were used in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The comic saw Peter Parker making a deal with the devil, in this case Mephisto, after his Aunt May was sH๏τ. In order to save her life, he makes a deal with Mephisto that would see the dissolution of his marriage to Mary Jane by changing history – a move that Mephisto also states will ensure that MJ and Spider-Man’s daughter, May “Mayday” Parker, will never exist.
Details concerning changing the past and making deals that dissolve his relationship with MJ were used in adapting the story for Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, rather than using Mephisto, the MCU had Doctor Strange perform this incredible magic. Considering Strange’s inability to help Peter with his request in the comic, it is a strange contrast. It would appear that the MCU’s Doctor Strange may then be more powerful than his comic counterpart in some senses, and was therefore able to replace Mephisto in his own story.
Why The MCU Hasn’t Used Mephisto In Its Story Yet
The Franchise Had To Build Up To The Villain
When Mephisto was first rumored for WandaVision, I remember people talking about how the devil character would not fit into the MCU as it was. I believe this was true, and that including a demonic figure as the villain in this stage of the franchise would not have worked. However, the franchise has actually become much more multiversal and spiritual in a sense in the past few years. After series like Agatha All Along introduced characters like Death, Mephisto definitely fit better into the current MCU.
With that said, however, the villain is incredibly powerful, possessing abilities that have not yet been seen in the franchise, and it would be hard to fit him into any story. Still, the тιтle for Spider-Man: Brand New Day may point to conflicts involving the character in the upcoming sequel, and there are other projects, including Ironheart, that are also rumored to feature an appearance by the character. Mephisto will certainly enter the MCU at some point, and likely soon.
It will likely not be much longer before audiences get to see Mephisto enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character is a compelling and terrifying foe, and a kind of threat that has not yet been seen in the series. Featuring him could provide some interesting opportunities for the franchise, whether played by Sacha Baron Cohen – as has been rumored – or another actor entirely. I would be shocked if Mephisto did not enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe by the end of the Multiverse Saga.
