2 Years After Wonder Woman 3’s Cancelation, I Can’t Believe We Still Don’t Know Who The DCU’s Wonder Woman Is

Over two years after the cancelation of Wonder Woman 3, it is still unknown who will play Wonder Woman in the partially rebooted DC Universe. In the original DC Extended Universe, Gal Gadot played Wonder Woman, winning over viewers in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017’s Wonder Woman. While the DCEU was inconsistent, as far as critical and commercial successes, Gadot’s Wonder Woman was by far one of the best elements of the franchise. Thus far, though, little has been revealed about the Wonder Woman sub-franchise since the shift towards the DCU.

Several notable updates on the DCU version of Wonder Woman came from Gal Gadot herself. In multiple interviews released in August 2023, Gadot stated that she would be working on a version of Wonder Woman 3 in the DC Universe with James Gunn and Peter Safran. Gadot also stated that Gunn and Safran ᴀssured her that she would remain in the Wonder Woman role in the partially rebooted franchise. Later reports – which neither Gadot nor Gunn would comment on – would say that Gal Gadot is not going to portray Wonder Woman in the DCU, complicating the franchise’s setup.

So Much Has Changed About DC’s Movies Since Wonder Woman 3’s Cancelation – But We Still Don’t Know Who The Next Wonder Woman Casting Is

In December 2023 – around the time that Henry Cavill announced his departure from the Superman role – Wonder Woman 3 was confirmed to be canceled by Patty Jenkins and James Gunn, making Gal Gadot’s potential future as Wonder Woman unclear. During the January 2023 announcement of the DCU’s slate of film and TV properties, James Gunn and Peter Safran noted that, at the time, only Superman and Batman would be recast. David Corenswet has since been cast as the DCU’s Superman and a new actor is expected to be announced as Batman for the upcoming The Brave and the Bold.

In March 2025, Gal Gadot stated that she is unsure about her potential reprisal of the Wonder Woman role in the DC Universe.

James Gunn’s comments on Wonder Woman – one of DC’s “big three” superheroes – have been noncommittal, however. Gunn has stated repeatedly that Gal Gadot has not been fired and that she remains enthusiastic about reprising the Wonder Woman role. Gunn’s most recent statement on the matter has been a confirmation that Wonder Woman’s DCU actress has not been decided on yet. This is consistent with his January 2023 implication that he has not yet decided whether to keep Gadot in the role or recast her.

However, a 2023 DCU Variety report has challenged this concept, having stated that “none of the stars cast by Zack Snyder […] will reprise their roles in the new DC universe in character.” While this could be disproved by later announcements or releases – since plans could have changed, or the report could have been based off information that didn’t take everything into account – it is worth noting the report also stated that Jason Momoa was in talks to take on a different role in the DCU, which has since been confirmed to be the case with the actor’s Lobo casting.

The DC Universe’s Wonder Woman Project Suggests We May Not See DC’s New Casting For Some Time

Amazonians, including Wonder Woman, charge forward in battle in a DC comic

Thus far, the only announced DCU project that centers solely on Wonder Woman’s corner of DC lore is the Paradise Lost TV series. The show will take place before Diana Prince’s birth, however, so while it may establish a new history for the DCU’s Amazons, it is highly unlikely that it will include Wonder Woman herself. This, unfortunately, means that viewers may have to wait quite a bit longer to find out who will play Wonder Woman in the DC Universe.
