Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse‘s release date has finally been revealed, but I cannot believe it came over a year after the film was supposed to be released. Like many people, I have been eagerly anticipating the story of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The franchise has provided some of the best Spider-Man stories in recent years, with the ending of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse leaving off on a mᴀssive cliffhanger that only made the excitement for a sequel that much more palpable.

While other upcoming Spider-Man movies are in development – like the MCU’s recently confirmed Spider-Man: Brand New Day – Beyond the Spider-Verse is often singled out as the most anticipated of the bunch. This is primarily due to the sheer artistry on display in the first two installments, yet this very artistry has led to lengthy delays for the film. Finally, the release date for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has been announced, but I am shocked by how long this has taken.

Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse Was Initially Set To Release In 2024

Long Before The Official Release Date Announcement

When production began on a sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, a third film was still planned to conclude the trilogy. However, producers and writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller quickly realized that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was too big of a story to tell in one movie. This led to the film being split into two parts, initially тιтled Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) and (Part Two). Eventually, though, the latter was renamed as Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Given the original plan of the films being two parts of the same whole, production began on both. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was then released in June 2023, with the sequel expected nine months later in March 2024. However, the industry strikes of 2023 and other development issues led Sony to remove Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse from its March 2024 slot, with an official release date beyond that not being confirmed. Over a year after this initial release date, the true window for the film’s theatrical run has been confirmed at long last.

Beyond The Spider-Verse Was Left In Limbo

As I have already alluded to, updates about Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse came few and far between after it was pulled from its original March 2024 slot. Rumors and reports began being directed at the movie, with many claiming that Sony Pictures had completely scrapped the planned storyline of the film in favor of a complete reboot. That said, the creative team ensured audiences that this was not the case and that the delay was simply a way of ensuring that Beyond the Spider-Verse lived up to its predecessors.

After all, the highly-ranked Spider-Man movies are so revered due to their groundbreaking animation styles. It was reported that, internally, animators were worried about being overworked in the nine-month gap between the second and third movies, which would have also resulted in a disappointing end result. As such, the film was delayed from March 2024 to give time for the story to be finalized and for the animators to continue their excellent work. Regardless of how sound the reasoning was, it became frustrating that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse spent over a year without an official release date in place.

The Two Franchises Will Not Clash

With all said and done, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has finally been given an official release date. This was announced at Sony’s CinemaCon panel in April 2024, 13 months after the film’s original release date. As per the announcement, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be released on June 4. 2027, four years after its predecessor. Although it is exciting to even have a release date for the film that is unlikely to be delayed further, the confirmed release window means Beyond the Spider-Verse will not clash with the MCU’s recently-announced Spider-Man film.

At the same CinemaCon panel in April 2025, Sony officially announced Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth installment in the MCU series starring Tom Holland. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released in July 2026, 11 months before Beyond the Spider-Verse. Admittedly, it is frustrating that the wait continues for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. However, if this is what it takes for the film to be as excellent as its predecessors, it at least means the film will live up to expectations and stand apart from Holland’s upcoming Spider-Man adventures.
