Sofia Carson‘s latest romantic comedy-drama has enjoyed a strong debut on the Netflix global charts. Carson first rose to prominence playing the role of Evie in Disney’s hit musical fantasy film Descendants and reprised her role in further installments of the series. She has also starred in other Disney projects, including Adventures in Babysitting, and the show Austin & Ally, as well as appearing in the Netflix romantic drama Purple Hearts and 2024’s hit festive action thriller Carry-On, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.
Carson has also enjoyed a successful music career, making her debut in 2015 as part of the Descendants soundtrack album, namely with the song “Rotten to the Core,” which she released as a single. She signed a record deal in 2016, releasing the song Love Is the Name, and following up with her eponymous debut album. In addition, Carson appeared on American Idol in 2021. She has enjoyed successful stints in projects, including Faking It, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, and My Little Pony: A New Generation, but it’s her most recent movie that is enjoying prominence on Netflix.
The Life List Is Enjoying Unexpected Netflix Success
The Movie Is Striking A Chord With Audiences
The Life List, written and directed by Adam Brooks and based on the novel by Lori Nelson Spielman, follows Carson’s Alex who, after her mother’s death, revisits her childhood aspirations and sets out on a mission to achieve all her old goals. The Life List cast also includes Kyle Allen, Connie Britton, Sebastian de Souza, Chelsea Frei, and José Zúñiga. It is Brooks’ first directorial effort since the 2008 Ryan Reynolds romantic comedy Definitely, Maybe.
Romantic comedies often tend to do well on streaming sites, as people see them as a comfortable and safe option, but The Life List is also functioning as a touching ode to life that seems to be having a profound impact on audiences.
Per Netflix Tudum, The Life List has enjoyed a staggeringly successful debut week on Netflix, reaching #1 on the Netflix Global Top 10 Movies chart with 24.4 million views and 50.8 million hours viewed. The movie ranks above Netflix’s most expensive-ever movie, The Electric State, at no. 2, as well as Con Mom at no. 3, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera at no. 4, and The Twister: Caught in the Storm at no. 5. In addition, the movie is in the top 10 charts in 88 countries and the no. 1 film in 63 regions, including the United States, Argentina, and Mexico.
