Dennis Quaid Acknowledges That A Parent Trap Sequel Won’t Happen: “Maybe One Day, Another Version Will Be Made”

Dennis Quaid acknowledges that a sequel to The Parent Trap won’t happen, but hopes that “maybe one day, another version will be made.” The 1998 romantic comedy stars Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson as divorced parents whose identical twin daughters (played by Lindsay Lohan), separated at birth but reunited at summer camp, attempt to get their parents back together. The Parent Trap cast also includes Elaine Hendrix, Lisa Ann Walter, Simon Kunz, Polly Holliday, Maggie Wheeler, Ronnie Stevens, and Joanna Barnes.

During a recent interview with Business Insider, Dennis Quaid was asked if there was ever talk of making a sequel to The Parent Trap before his co-star Natasha Richardson pᴀssed away in 2009. Quaid acknowledges that “there had been some talk, but it would be impossible to do now” after her death, and as a result, no one discusses it. However, he hopes that “maybe one day, another version will be made for another generation.” Read his full comments below:

There had been some talk, but it would be impossible to do now… No, and nobody else does. I don’t think we’d have the heart for it. Maybe one day, another version will be made for another generation. We all still miss Natasha.

What Dennis Quaid’s Comments Mean For A Parent Trap Sequel

A Sequel Won’t Happen, But Another Adaptation Is Possible

The Parent Trap was a box office hit upon its release in 1998, making over $92 million against its $15 million budget. It also received positive reviews from critics, mostly for Lindsay Lohan’s performance in her film debut, which is widely regarded as a key contributor to the film’s success, serving as her breakthrough and propelling her to stardom. However, a Parent Trap sequel simply never materialized, mostly due to the tragic death of Natasha Richardson, who pᴀssed away from a head injury suffered during a skiing accident in 2009.

However, Quaid hopes that “maybe one day, another version will be made for another generation.” The 1998 version of The Parent Trap was a remake of the 1961 film of the same name and an adaptation of the 1949 German children’s novel, Lisa and Lottie. In turn, since The Parent Trap is one of Disney’s most recognizable properties, another adaptation will likely be made someday, just as Quaid says. In fact, in 2018, Disney was reportedly considering a remake of The Parent Trap as a Disney+ exclusive.

Our Take On Dennis Quaid’s Parent Trap Comments

They’re Respectful Of Natasha Richardson & The Movie’s Legacy

Dennis Quaid’s stance on a Parent Trap sequel is both respectful of the late Natasha Richardson and the original movie’s legacy. Without her, a direct sequel would feel inappropriate and incomplete, since she was also integral to the original movie’s heart and charm. The Parent Trap is beloved, and forcing a belated sequel could risk tarnishing its legacy. Quaid’s stance correctly honors that legacy and recognizes that some classics should remain untouched. However, given Disney’s propensity for remakes, it’s likely that another version of The Parent Trap will be made someday for another generation, just as Quaid says.
