James Marsden’s Cyclops Suit Comments Make Avengers: Doomsday Even More Exciting 25 Years After X-Men’s Most Infamous Quote

Now that James Marsden has been confirmed to return as Cyclops in Avengers: Doomsday, the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie could make his wish come true and connect to the most infamous X-Men movie quote. Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast was recently announced. Marvel knew it would make waves, as a long livestream revealed that multiple stars from Fox’s X-Men franchise would be back for the film. That includes Marsden, who last played Cyclops in a cameo in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Marsden is only one of many stars from Fox’s X-Men franchise who are returning for the upcoming Avengers movie. The decision is interesting, as it could lead to the Avengers and the X-Men either working together or having to fight each other. Marsden will be joined by returning X-Men franchise stars Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn, with Marvel Studios also teasing on social media that more names should be added to Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast. With his confirmed MCU debut, Marsden can finally do an important thing for the first time as Cyclops.

James Marsden Wants To Wear Cyclops’ Comics-Accurate Suit

The X-Men Franchise Star Has Yet To Do So

In the original X-Men franchise, the team wore black leather outfits instead of the X-Men’s bright comic book suits. That means Marsden’s Cyclops never got to appear in live-action with the hero’s iconic yellow and blue X-Men costume from the comics. The actor is well aware of that, and Marsden would be game to change things. During an interview with Jake’s Takes in December 2024, months before he was announced to return to Marvel in Avengers: Doomsday, the actor was asked whether he had seen ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine and what it would take to get him in the comics-accurate suit.

At the time, Marsden claimed he had no idea about a possible return as Cyclops, which has now been confirmed three months after the interview. The X-Men franchise star loved ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, with Marsden commenting about wearing the suit, saying, “Obviously always a fun thing to don that suit, so yeah, I mean, we’ll see.” Marvel Studios has already shown that it can do right by Cyclops after the X-Men movies let him down. Disney+’s X-Men ’97 showcased Scott Summers’ leadership skills, with Cyclops wearing his yellow and blue X-Men costume, which Marvel can repeat now for Marsden.

How ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine Shows The MCU Can Undo Cyclops’ Most Infamous Quote

James Marsden’s Marvel Character Can Finally Don Yellow Spandex In The MCU

During the interview, Marsden also talked about how great it was to see Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine finally in his comics-accurate suit in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine. Marvel Studios gave him the full yellow and blue X-Men costume, including Wolverine’s cowl. Not only did it look great in live-action, but the look was universally beloved. 26 years after the first X-Men movie was released, Avengers: Doomsday can turn Cyclops’ most infamous quote, “What would you prefer? Yellow spandex?” around by having the character who said it wear his comics-accurate suit when Marsden steps back into Scott Summers’ shoes.
