David Yarovesky directed 2019’s Brightburn, an unusual subversion of the story of Superman, and after recent comments from the filmmaker, I’d love to see him helm a project in the new DC Universe. With so many different kinds of upcoming DC movies in the works, embodying all kinds of genres and styles, it seems that there is room for virtually any kind of filmmaker within the new fold. However, details of Yarovesky’s history, style, and relationships with key creatives make him a clear contender to make something special in this new franchise.
The DCU have already set up all kinds of stories, including ones I expected from the MCU. With a superhero blockbuster in Superman, a war movie in Sgt. Rock and a body-horror movie in Clayface, there are clearly many different genres already accounted for in the new franchise. It seems likely that even more kinds of films will soon make their way into the franchise, and that different creators with original ideas will be given flexibility with their DCU projects. All of this helps to identify Yarovesky as a great choice for the franchise.

There Are Few Superhero Movies Like Brightburn
Brightburn was an excellent subversion of the Superman story, which saw a child crashing to Earth from outer space and being taken in by a family in Kansas. The boy’s powers quickly began to manifest when he turned 12, and he discovered that he had exceptional strength and could fly. From there, the setup, which initially mimicked Superman’s story, was turned on its head when it was revealed that the boy, named Brandon, had darker intentions. This sent Brandon on a violent and unexpected path.
With this Superman setup, the film then falls into familiar trappings of horror but with a unique superhero bent. Rather than dwelling on the goodness of a hero like Superman, Brightburn imagined what it would be like if Superman was evil rather than good. The film seemed to take some of the controversial Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ideas about the danger of superpowers that could not be controlled. The film received a decent reception, but its announced sequel was eventually canceled.

The Director Has An Important Professional Relationship With James Gunn
David Yarovesky recently spoke to ScreenRant, where he opened up about being willing to make a movie within the DC Universe. As DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn worked as a producer on Brightburn, there was already a connection between the two. Yaroveksy acknowledged this, saying he’d love to make a DCU movie if the right project came along: “I’d love to work with James again. He’s my mentor. I adore James, and he has been incredible to me.” With this connection established, there is great potential ahead.
What seems most notable is that Yarovesky is willing to take on a DC movie if the right project comes along.
Yarovesky continued by remarking that “it’s so funny that we made Brightburn, and now he’s making Superman.” First, the two worked together to subvert Superman’s story, and now Gunn is working on the next big-screen iteration of the character. However, with this established, what seems most notable is that Yarovesky is willing to take on a DC movie if the right project comes along. With a diverse spattering of genres set for the new franchise, there are likely many films that would fit his style.

Many Potential DCU Movies Could Fit Yarovesky’s Style
David Yarovesky has proven that he can make thrillers with the release of Locked, family movies with Nightbooks, and superhero films with Brightburn. Amongst all of these projects, however, there is a unique sheen of darkness that could uniquely equip the director to make all kinds of different DCU films. The Authority, which has been hard to get right for DC, could be a potential choice for Yarovesky, with its darker spin on superhero stories, while the upcoming Clayface suggests that more horror movies could be made in the franchise.
A character like Jason Momoa’s Lobo, with his self-aware, yet dark and violent style, could be a good fit for Yarovesky to work with. Wherever Lobo winds up after Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, getting Yarovesky to helm a project for the character might be a good move. However, with the flexibility and shape of the universe, it seems likely that the director could become involved in all kinds of different DCU projects, and could help foster them toward success.
Horror directors have tended to make great superhero films. James Gunn himself began in horror before moving into Guardians of the Galaxy, and filmmakers like David F. Sandberg cut their teeth on films like Lights Out before finding great success with Shazam!. With the DC Universe set to comprise all kinds of genres, there are now more opportunities than ever before for Yarovesky to join the new franchise, and I can’t wait to see what films he may wind up making for the new studio.
