Hailee Steinfeld’s Role In Michael B. Jordan’s New Movie Is A Career First After 19 Movies

Hailee Steinfeld has a major role in Michael B. Jordan’s new movie Sinners, and it’s an exciting career first for the young star. The actress has been a rising figure in Hollywood over the last 15 years following her Oscar-nominated breakthrough role in True Grit. She’s no stranger to being part of major productions, such as the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee or Sony’s animated Spider-Verse movies. Sinners is another big moment in her career as she pairs up with Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler for an original vampire movie with franchise aspirations.

From the moment that she was cast in Sinners, Steinfeld’s involvement became an incredibly exciting element for the film. The exact nature of her role was unclear for some time, but the marketing campaign has shed more light on her character, Mary, over time. The original trailers made her out to be a love interest for Michael B. Jordan’s character. Sinners‘ second trailer delivered a surprise by revealing Steinfeld will be one of the blood-thirsty vampires Jordan has to fight. That unexpected development twists up Mary’s role in the narrative.

Hailee Steinfeld’s Mary Will Be A Villain In Sinners

She Wants To Kill Everyone According To The Trailers

Hailee Steinfeld as a bloody vampire in Sinners

The reveal that Mary is a vampire in Sinners went a step further, as it confirmed she’s ultimately a villain. Steinfeld’s character says, “We gon’ kill every last one o’ya,” in the trailer as she’s soaked in blood and smiling. The line is likely directed at one of Jordan’s twin characters or another heroic character. That would mean that she is a villain in Sinners, if she’s at odds with Jordan’s characters, potentially making her the secondary antagonist to the main vampire villain played by Jack O’Connell.

In theory, there is a chance that Steinfeld’s Mary is actually a “good” vampire. A friendly vampire working with normal humans to defeat evil vampires is something other similar genre stories have done before. There is no evidence to suggest that is what is happening in Sinners. That would make the reveal that Steinfeld’s character isn’t actually a villain all the more surprising. Her big villain moment in the trailer would be a significant piece of misdirection rather than a spoiler. That’s not expected to be the case, though.

Hailee Steinfeld Has Never Played A Villain Before & That Makes Sinners Even More Exciting

Sinners Can Show A Completely New Side Of Her

Mary’s villainous nature in Sinners is unfamiliar territory, as Hailee Steinfeld has never played a villain before. She’s been in nearly 20 movies, and had roles in additional TV shows, but she’s always played the hero. Her history with heroes is understandable, considering how well she’s played everyone from Charlie in Bumblebee, Kate Bishop in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Gwen Stacy in Spider-Verse. That only makes it more refreshing to see Steinfeld step outside her comfort zone to play a bloodthirsty, seductive, evil vampire.

Sinners now becomes an opportunity for Steinfeld to show a completely different side of herself as a performer. A lot of her signature charm can still be present, but the added layer of malice will switch up how she uses it. Steinfeld having any role in Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler’s new movie was exciting already. Knowing that she’s playing her first villain and can experiment with a different type of character only makes Sinners more exciting to me.
