New Stephen King Movie Is $13 Million Away From Breaking Into A Prestigious Box Office Top 10

The most recent Stephen King adaptation, Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey, has experienced success that exceeds all initial expectations. The movie follows brothers Hal and Bill, who attempt to destroy a monkey toy that has caused mysterious and gory deaths around them since childhood. While The Monkey has some changes from the original story, it has been incredibly well-received since its release last month thanks to its impressive combination of outright horror and dark humor.

In addition to its success at the box office, The Monkey debuted with an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score, receiving positive reviews from critics. While some audience members have been divided on The Monkey, its ongoing success at the box office shows that the movie has not been too impacted by this response. There are numerous other Stephen King adaptations in the works to look forward to this year, and The Monkey proves that new adaptations of the author’s works are even able to surpᴀss some of the most legendary horror movies of all time.

The Monkey Needs Another $13 Million To Be One Of Stephen King’s Top 10 Movies At The Box Office

This Is An Impressive Feat For An Author With So Many Adaptations

Stephen King’s works have been adapted more than 50 times, so the possibility of The Monkey entering the top 10 highest-grossing King adaptations would be quite an impressive feat. Currently, The Monkey has grossed $62.3 million worldwide during its theatrical run so far (via Box Office Mojo). The number 10 movie on King’s highest-grossing list is 2003’s Dreamcatcher, which grossed $75.6 million overall (via The Numbers). Despite not being in the top 10 yet, The Monkey has already pᴀssed highly regarded King adaptations like The Shawshank Redemption, The Shining, Stand by Me, and more.

The Monkey has undeniably made its mark among King’s adaptations and has more than made up its $11 million budget.

At the time of writing this article, The Monkey is currently the 12th highest-grossing adaptation. It would need to surpᴀss 2019’s Doctor Sleep, which grossed $72.3 million, before catching up to Dreamcatcher in 10th. The Monkey has undeniably made its mark among King’s adaptations and has more than made up its $11 million budget. The movie also serves as a great reminder that films like It, It: Chapter Two, and The Green Mile, which make up the top three, will remain the standard for just how influential Stephen King’s work is.

Will The Monkey Become Of Stephen King’s 10 Biggest Movies At The Box Office?

The Movie Is Currently Still Making Money

The Monkey is still playing in select theaters, so it is definitely still bringing in money. However, each week the movie’s returns decrease. For example, in the week of March 21st, The Monkey grossed $2.1 million domestically, marking a 41% decrease from the previous week. If this same pattern holds, the movie will drop below $1.3 million for the next week (via The Numbers). Especially considering that its theatrical run is nearing an end, it seems unlikely that The Monkey will be able to make the $13 million jump at this time.

Though The Monkey is showing in fewer theaters each week, this does mean that it is likely getting closer to its digital release. The movie becoming available for purchase or rental could definitely aid in its overall gross, but home market performance is often tallied separately from box office performance. Regardless of how The Monkey‘s digital release goes, it has already proved itself to be incredibly successful at the box office. While it might not make the $13 million it needs to enter the top 10 list now, The Monkey has already cemented its place among King’s best adaptations.
