A24’s Highest-Grossing Horror Movie Is Now Streaming On Netflix, And A Sequel Is Already In The Works

As of March 28, the Australian horror film, Talk to Me, is now streaming on Netflix for audiences to enjoy. The 2023 movie follows a group of teenagers who use an embalmed hand to become possessed and communicate with ghosts. The teens are required to follow a 90-second rule with the hand that will allow them to experience the high of touching it without staying long enough to allow the spirit to permanently possess them. Unfortunately, this rule gets broken quickly, leading to increasingly dark visions for Talk to Me‘s main character, Mia.

The movie is an incredibly entertaining and quite dark watch that will have viewers hooked until Talk to Me‘s surprising ending. What’s more, its masterful performances by its young cast give the movie the depth that audiences of A24’s horror films have come to expect. At the time of its release, Talk to Me earned a record-high score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it has maintained that praise since. While Talk to Me was already mᴀssively successful when released, now that it is streaming on Netflix, even more audiences will be able to enjoy A24’s successful horror.

A24’s Most Successful Horror Movie, Talk To Me, Is Now Streaming On Netflix

Talk To Me Was Both Financially Successful And Highly Rated

Shortly after its release, Talk to Me surpᴀssed Hereditary to become A24’s highest-grossing horror film, and it has maintained that position ever since. Talk to Me‘s opening weekend saw the film earn $10.4 million, easily surpᴀssing its $4.5 million budget during its first weekend (via ᴅᴇᴀᴅline). The movie remained in the top 10 for six weeks, pᴀssing Hereditary during that time. As of now, Talk to Me has grossed $91.9 million worldwide, and Hereditary has grossed $80.9 million worldwide (via The Numbers).

Beyond just being A24’s highest-grossing horror movie, Talk to Me is the distributor’s third highest-grossing movie overall. It currently falls behind 2024’s Civil War and 2022’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, meaning that at the time of its release, Talk to Me was second overall. Like its box office ranking, Talk to Me is among A24’s highest-rated on Rotten Tomatoes. It currently shares its top-rated horror ranking with Ti West’s 2022 movie X, and it is placed 18th among all of A24’s movies.

Talk To Me 2 Is Currently In Development

The Film’s Story Has Yet To Be Announced

Sophia Wilde as Mia in Talk to Me

Thanks to the success of the first movie, a sequel to Talk to Me is currently in development at A24, with Danny and Michael Philippou set to return as the directors. Though no news of the film’s story has yet been announced, Talk to Me‘s ending does set up a few different possibilities. Mia could return as one of the spirits in the new film, or it may focus on an entirely new group encountering the hand. It could also be interesting to explore more about where the hand came from before reaching Mia’s friend group, as the short prequel clips did.

Despite not working as great marketing for Talk to Me, the prequel clips do show just how many options there are to continue the hand’s story.

When the film was originally released, the directors attempted to release short clips on social media giving more backstory about the character Duckett, who is seen in the film’s opening scene. However, because of the violent themes of those videos, they were removed and have not been officially released since. Despite not working as great marketing for Talk to Me, the prequel clips do show just how many options there are to continue the hand’s story. Whatever the focus ends up being, Talk to Me‘s sequel seems like another promising addition to A24’s catalog.
