Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Moana 2!
Moana 2 officially made Moana a demigod, and while this was a good reveal, the Moana sequel didn’t really show what that means. Moana being a demigod is the biggest reveal in Moana 2, with Moana 2 ending with this cliffhanger ending that has changed the franchise forever. However, Moana 2‘s demigod reveal raises a lot more questions than it answers, with Moana’s new demigod status being at the center of several mysteries that can’t be solved until Moana 3.
Throughout Moana and the vast majority of Moana 2, Moana is merely a human, with her having to use her wits to outsmart the mythical figures and magical creatures seen throughout the films. However, after nearly dying in an attempt to save the island of Motufetu, Moana is given the powers of a demigod. This allows Moana to reunite the various wayfinding societies and create a more interconnected world, setting the stage for several exciting future stories in the Moana universe.
Moana 2 Only Teases What Being A Demigod Means For Moana
Since It Only Happens At The End
Moana 2 only barely scratches the surface of what Moana being a demigod means, as the protagonist is barely given any screentime after this major reveal. It is shown that Moana has some new magical powers, with these abilities helping her with her wayfinding tasks as well as her interactions with the water. However, her demigod powers aren’t fully explained, with Moana 2 only teasing what she is able to do thanks to her new mythical status.
On top of that, Moana 2 doens’t really explain the new role and responsibilities that come with Moana’s demigod status. For example, Moana 2 doesn’t really examine how Moana will now interact with the world of gods, something that has barely been touched on in the two movies. It also raises questions about how Moana will interact with the other humans. It is possible that humans could start to worship Moana, in a similar way to how they worship Maui and the other gods. Moana’s immortality also raises some questions, as she could remain her current age forever, much like Maui.
Moana’s Demigod Transformation Is More Important For Moana 3
It’ll Play A Bigger Role In The Sequel
Moana’s demigod transformation may have been revealed at the end of Moana 2, but it is actually a lot more important for Moana 3. A potential Moana 3 is the first time that a film will be able to use the demigod Moana throughout its entire story, meaning that these new powers and responsibilities will most likely be a major focus of the story.
Being a demigod will undoubtedly change Moana’s life, and Moana 3 can show just how much it has changed. Moana’s powers will probably help her take on bigger threats, and the reuniting of the wayfinding societies will also be thanks to these same powers. Moana 2‘s demigod reveal raised a lot of questions, and Moana 3 will have to answer them.
