The Blade reboot may finally be going forward, as Marvel Studios is reportedly targeting the director of the John Wick series to helm the Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot. Since San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Marvel Studios have been actively working on their new Blade reboot, with Ali playing the тιтular character in the MCU timeline. However, following several delays, Blade is currently without a director and release date, as Marvel Studios is still trying to figure out the direction for the Marvel icon.
According to The InSneider, John Wick’s own Chad Stahelski is reportedly being looked at to direct the MCU’s Blade reboot with Mahershala Ali. At the time of this story’s publication, Marvel Studios has not commented on the Blade report about Stahelski. However, the director taking the role would make sense based on a previous interview with The Playlist, where Stahelski said that he would love to work on a Blade movie, stating that “Of all the things out there, I would take a swing at ‘Blade’ in a second.”
What Blade’s New Director May Mean For The MCU
While time will tell if Stahelski ends up getting the job or not, if it is true that he is on Marvel Studios’ radar for Blade, it means that they are clearly getting on the right track for what they want to do with Ali’s character in the MCU. Given the mᴀssive talent they have with Ali as the lead of Blade, the pressure on the project is extremely high, especially given how Blade is popular in the Marvel canon. As frustrating as it has been to see the reboot go through the many creative issues, it’s better that they are taking their time than canceling the Blade movie altogether.
The bigger question, however, is whether or not they are intending Blade to be part of The Multiverse Saga, or if his solo film may actually be saved until Phase 7. At this point, given Marvel Studios is busy with Avengers: Doomsday – which is one of the final big pieces to wrap up The Multiverse Saga – it could make more sense to schedule Blade for Phase 7. Since Avengers: Secret Wars is rumored to set up a soft reboot for the MCU, having the Blade movie debut in a new iteration of this franchise would likely service the character far better than being placed in Phase 6.
Our Take On The Blade Director Report
If the Blade reboot ends up being directed by Stahelski, it would be a major addition to Marvel Studios’ lineup of directors, especially based on from his work on the John Wick movies. But for the time being, if he is simply being eyed, it is always possible that other directors may be up for the gig too. Hopefully, Marvel Studios will clarify sooner rather than later if the new Blade report is accurate or not.
