Pierce Brosnan has revealed that he would have said “yes” to playing one iconic Harry Potter character in the fantasy franchise if he’d been offered it. The cast of the Harry Potter movies have become famously ᴀssociated with their roles, such as Daniel Radcliffe’s portrayal as the тιтular character. However, with a TV remake of J.K. Rowling’s popular fantasy series now in development, major characters from the franchise are being recast. These new cast members taking on old roles include Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and John Lithgow as Professor Albus Dumbledore.
However, while speaking with The Telegraph about his upcoming TV show Mobland, Brosnan admitted that, if there was one Harry Potter character he would have wanted to play, it would have been Dumbledore. The head of Hogwarts was originally portrayed by Richard Harris, who is an uncle to the actor’s adopted children. This family connection has led to jokes about his “Dumbledore years” as his hair grays, saying that if offered, he would’ve stepped into the role. Check out what Brosnan had to say below:
I’ve always had my eyes on Dumbledore as my hair has gotten greyer and the maturity of life is now upon my visage and shoulders.
It’s a joke with my family, the Dumbledore thing – that I’ll go into my Dumbledore years. I don’t want to go there … particularly right now, but if I was asked [to play the part] I probably would say yes.
What Brosnan’s Dumbledore Would Have Meant For Harry Potter
Could The Actor Have Pulled The Role Off?
Brosnan’s best movies have included his involvement in major franchises, from the тιтle character of the TV show Remington Steele to portraying James Bond across four different movies. The actor is still getting plenty of roles right now as well, having recently starred in the spy film Black Bag and the HBO TV movie The Great Lillian Hall. Given his track record for thrilling dramas across movies and TV shows, his interest in playing Dumbledore isn’t too surprising.
However, this idea was unfortunately dashed when it was revealed Lithgow would be joining the cast of the Harry Potter TV show as Dumbledore. Had Brosnan been cast in the role instead, he may have pulled from his more suave roles like Bond to differentiate himself from Harris and Michael Gambon. He also could have channeled his children’s biological uncle, utilizing his performance as inspiration for his own. Given his prowess in various films, he could have easily slid into the role, adding his own flair to the professor in the process.
Our Take On Brosnan Wanting To Play Dumbledore
His Rendition Would Have Been Memorable
Even though Brosnan ultimately won’t be portraying Dumbledore, him playing the major Harry Potter character would have made for an intriguing interpretation of the character. Even though he won’t be playing him, the actor’s upcoming projects like Mobland showcase he’s continuing to bring interesting and memorable stories to life. While Lithgow will likely do a stellar job portraying Dumbledore, the James Bond alum is still an intriguing choice, making his not portraying him slightly bittersweet.
