Channing Tatum’s Gambit MCU Movie Return Confirmed & Promises To Make Him A True X-Men Member

Channing Tatum’s Gambit officially returns to the MCU after ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, this time surrounded by Fox’s original X-Men cast in Avengers: Doomsday. More than a decade after Taylor Kitsch’s Gambit made a tepid impression in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Channing Tatum stole the spotlight with his comedic Gambit performance in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine. While ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine‘s ending doesn’t reveal what exactly happens to Gambit and the rest of the resistance in the Void, one of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine‘s blink-and-you-miss-it easter eggs shows Gambit smirking at a TVA camera, suggesting he would return sooner rather than later.

As revealed by Marvel Studios in Avengers: Doomsday‘s official cast announcement live event, Channing Tatum will return as the Gambit variant introduced in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine. Tatum’s Gambit joins other multiversal X-Men characters such as Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, Ian McKellen’s Magneto, James Marsden’s Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, and Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique in Avengers: Doomsday. Other X-Men heroes like Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds’ ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool are expected to return.

What Channing Tatum’s Gambit Returning In Avengers: Doomsday Means

Channing Tatum’s Gambit Will Make A Name For Himself Alongside Fox’s X-Men Mutants

In ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, Channing Tatum’s Gambit has a running gag about not being known or appreciated. This is a nod to Channing Tatum’s canceled Gambit movie, which was supposed to be part of Fox’s X-Men movie franchise and even connect to Fox’s Fant4stic. Just like his solo movie, Tatum’s Gambit was essentially discarded to the Void, which motivated him to “make a name” for himself by joining ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool and Wolverine in the rebellion against Cᴀssandra Nova. After the events of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, Gambit’s wish will come true. Not only will Tatum’s Gambit star in an Avengers movie, but he’ll also do it alongside popular X-Men actors — an arguably better deal than a solo installment.

Channing Tatum’s Gambit will likely exit the Void to join the Avengers and the X-Men in their battle against Doctor Doom. Surprisingly, though, Gambit’s fellow Void heroes X-23, Elektra, and Blade weren’t confirmed in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday announcement. It’s possible that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom kills Gambit’s teammates, but the more likely scenario is that ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine‘s Void variant team will only make a cameo in Avengers: Doomsday.

Following Gambit’s introduction in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, the biggest question surrounding Channing Tatum’s mutant character was how Marvel Studios could bring him back. One option was integrating Tatum’s Gambit into the MCU’s X-Men reboot cast, though that would probably make Tatum’s Gambit much older than the rest of the MCU’s new generation of mutants. Channing Tatum’s official return as Gambit in Avengers: Doomsday now supports the idea that he’ll only join the multiversal X-Men before a reboot introduces a new variant of the cajun hero.
