Predicting Snow White’s Final Box Office Total After Its Disappointing Opening Weekend

Snow White‘s opening weekend box office numbers were disappointing, to say the least, yet they can help in formulating a prediction for what the film will accumulate by the end of its theatrical run. Snow White‘s box office was predicted to get off to a reasonable start, with outlets projecting the film to earn at least $100 million worldwide in its opening weekend. However, the latest of Disney’s live-action remakes underperformed, likely disappointing the House of Mouse after a string of relatively successful movies of this ilk.

One potential reason for this was the controversies surrounding Snow White. Beyond that, it is common knowledge that the public desire for Disney’s live-action remakes is long past its peak. Finally, Snow White‘s budget was a mᴀssive $270 million, if the higher end of reported costs is to be believed. For this reason, Snow White could not overcome divided Rotten Tomatoes scores to perform as its predecessors in Disney’s live-action remake series have, with the opening weekend numbers providing grim reading regarding a prediction for the film’s final total haul.

The Film Fell Below Expectations

As alluded to already, Snow White‘s opening was disappointing when compared to what it was expected to earn in its debut weekend. Snow White opened in most territories on March 21, 2025, and was expected to cross the $100 million mark to begin recouping part of the whopping budget on which it was produced. However, the film earned only a worldwide weekend total of $87.3 million, well below the estimated $100 million, and started off its theatrical run with a disappointing return.

This opening weekend performance did not provide any hints that Snow White could become a financial success for Disney…

Of the $87.3 million, only $44.3 million came in domestic markets. The other $43 million was hauled in overseas, meaning the film did not resonate with many across the globe. Unfortunately, this opening weekend performance did not provide any hints that Snow White could become a financial success for Disney, with many factors going against it.

Snow White Is Unlikely To Have Strong Legs At The Box Office

The Future Looks Bleak For Snow White

For Snow White to overcome its underwhelming opening weekend, the film would need to have strong legs at the box office. However, it is unlikely that this will come to fruition for several reasons. For one, Snow White faced a lot of controversy during its production that is still ongoing after release, which will undoubtedly affect how long it sticks around in theaters. Also, the film did not receive strong reviews nor overly positive audience word-of-mouth, making it less likely for more audiences to be convinced to see it in the coming weeks.

Wait times between theatrical and streaming releases are also growing increasingly short, meaning many audience members will decide to wait for the latter rather than go to the theater.

Finally, Snow White will face some stiff compeтιтion in the coming weeks and months. A Minecraft Movie, for example, is another family-friendly movie from an incredibly recognizable IP that will be released on April 4. This movie could easily take the spotlight off of Snow White, especially given both the ironic and unironic focus that the former movie has received on social media since its first trailer. Unlike Disney’s most recent live-action remake, Mufasa: The Lion King, Snow White is unlikely to continue pulling in much more money after its relatively disastrous opening weekend.

Mufasa: The Lion King actually opened to less than Snow White domestically with $35 million. However, the former had less compeтιтion in the long run, with basically the entirety of January free of any big-budget movies. This allowed Mufasa: The Lion King to have the legs to surpᴀss $700 million worldwide and on a smaller budget. Given the factors explored above, Snow White is unlikely to replicate this.

I Think Snow White’s Final Box Office Total Will Be $250 Million

Far Below Disney’s Expectations

Based on how Snow White has fared at the box office so far, it is difficult to imagine the film becoming anything other than a flop for Disney. To support this, I predict that Snow White will earn no more than $250 million at the worldwide box office by the end of its run. Given Snow White‘s $87 million worldwide opening weekend, the compeтιтion it faces in April, the controversies surrounding the film, and the lack of positive word-of-mouth from critics and audiences alike, the film is likely to have a significant drop in its second weekend.

Discounting Mufasa: The Lion King which was an outlier for the aforementioned reasons, the last two Disney live-action remakes – The Little Mermaid and Cruella – suffered big drops in their second weekends. Snow White has received worse critical and audience reactions than those movies, and neither had the same level of divisiveness that the 2025 effort possesses. As such, Snow White can be expected to suffer a similar fate and drop anywhere between 40% and 60%.

Disney Live-Action Remakes

Domestic Opening Weekend

The Lion King

$191 million

Beauty and the Beast

$174 million

Alice in Wonderland

$116 million

The Jungle Book

$103 million

The Little Mermaid

$95 million

Aladdin

$91 million

Maleficent

$69 million

Cinderella

$67 million

Snow White and the Huntsman

$56 million

Dumbo

$46 million

Snow White

$43 million

Mufasa: The Lion King

$35 million

In the best-case scenario here, Snow White can be expected to earn around $50 million worldwide in its second weekend, taking its total to $130 million. The film will only continue to drop from there, with any subsequent weekends taking the film up to around $250 million at the absolute most. Sadly, it is difficult to imagine Snow White repeating Mufasa: The Lion King‘s increasingly rare change of fortunes by suffering a poor opening weekend but having lasting legs at the box office.

Based On My Prediction, Snow White Will Be A Box Office Flop

Far From The Fairest Of Them All

Based on my prediction, it is safe to say Snow White could be categorized as a box office flop. As I have mentioned, some reports have indicated that the upper limits of Snow White‘s production budget were $270 million due to the lengthy reshoots the film underwent. A general rule of thumb in Hollywood is that a film will need to earn at least double its production budget to begin earning a profit for the studio, meaning Snow White will have to cross at least $500 million to begin seeing any kind of return on Disney’s investment.

Combining this fact with my prediction that Snow White will earn $250 million, it is unlikely that the film will ever be seen as a success. This conjecture is also without taking into account the portions of the profits that movie theaters will take which sets Snow White up to fail even more so. With all of this in mind, Snow White‘s disappointing opening weekend box office seemingly set the movie down a path of failure that cannot live up to the lofty standards of Disney’s live-action remakes of the past.
