Zendaya To Star In Barry Jenkins’ Next Movie As He Returns To A24 After Mufasa

Zendaya is now set to star in a Ronnie Spector biopic тιтled Be My Baby with an impressive director. Spector was an American singer who led the 1960s girl group The Ronettes. The music group released hits such as “Be My Baby” and “Walking in the Rain.” As for Zendaya, she has acted in both movies and TV shows in several notable projects, most recently including the Denis Villeneuve sci-fi film Dune: Part Two and the Luca Guadagnino movie Challengers. The actor has won two Emmys for her work playing Rue in HBO’s Euphoria.

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Zendaya will star in Be My Baby, a biopic about Spector. The film will be produced by A24, and directed by Barry Jenkins. Dave Kajganich has signed on to write the script. The film will emphasize the singer’s challenging relationship with music producer Phil Spector. Zendaya was reportedly picked out by the singer herself before her 2022 pᴀssing.

What This Means For Be My Baby

Both Zendaya & Jenkins Have Previously Worked With A24

Be My Baby is an exciting way for both Zendaya and Jenkins to continue their working relationships with A24. A24 is one of the production companies behind Euphoria, and is behind the upcoming movie The Drama, which stars Zendaya alongside Robert Pattinson. As for Jenkins, he made his sophomore feature, Moonlight, with A24. Made on just a $4 million budget, Moonlight ended up winning Best Picture and earning Jenkins an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Jenkins has not reteamed with A24 since Moonlight, so Be My Baby will be an interesting chance for him to return to working the studio. Last year, the director went mainstream when he helmed the Disney musical Mufasa: The Lion King. While she has done a lot of work with auteur directors, Zendaya has also been in significant mainstream films. As such, the Ronnie Spector film has the potential to do well at the box office, especially for a biopic and A24 film, as it will bring those with blockbuster experience back to the indie environment.

Our Take On The Be My Baby News

Could This Movie Be Zendaya’s Oscar Chance?

Be My Baby has the potential to be Zendaya’s first viable chance at an Oscar. Biopics tend to do well among Academy voters, especially those that require actors to do some kind of significant impersonation. In fact, Zendaya’s Dune co-star Timothée Chalamet was recently nominated for an Oscar for playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, and the previous year’s winner was Cillian Murphy, who played real-life physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. Though the actor has had a lot of impressive roles, Be My Baby may just be the right type of part to get her Oscar recognition.
