Marvel Studios is still announcing the Avengers: Doomsday cast with a live stream on YouTube and multiple social media sites, but Chris Evans is emerging as one of the most hoped-for reveals for the MCU movie. Last summer, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the MCU, but not as Iron Man, as Doctor Doom. Since that major bombshell, speculation has run rampant about which other retired Marvel stars could return and what roles they could play.
It was previously reported that Evans would return to the MCU for Avengers: Doomsday, though his role wasn’t revealed. Since then, Evans responded to reports of his MCU return, reiterating his retirement: “That’s not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years—ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it… Yeah, no—happily retired!” Of course, it’s always possible that Evans made a deal to return but was instructed to keep it secret, like Andrew Garfield denying his appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
On YouTube, Marvel Studios started a live stream at 11am ET, which is still going five and a half hours later at 4:30pm ET, revealing members of the Avengers: Doomsday cast by panning across a line of chairs. So far, Marvel has confirmed multiple members of the new Fantastic Four and original X-Men cast, as well as Sam Wilson actor Anthony Mackie, who became the MCU’s new Captain America. However, I’m holding out hope that Marvel will confirm Chris Evans will return to the MCU for Avengers: Doomsday before the stream ends.
What Chris Evans Potentially Returning In Avengers: Doomsday Means
The Steve Rogers Actor Could Play A New Multiverse Character
The ending of Avengers: Endgame tied up Steve Rogers’ storyline in the MCU very nicely, giving the character a happy conclusion after pᴀssing on the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson, and it would be a shame for Marvel to ruin it. Evans has also been a staunch supporter of how Steve’s storyline ended in Endgame, saying that he’s very protective of it, so it’s unlikely he would return to that role specifically. But RJD’s casting as Doctor Doom has changed everything we thought we knew about the MCU.
It’s possible, and perhaps even likely, that if Evans were to return for Avengers: Doomsday, it would be as a different character. Just last year, Evans reprised his role as Johnny Storm from Fox’s early 2000s Fantastic Four movies for ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, and he could do so again. But, if he doesn’t come back as Johnny Storm again, he could play a multiverse variant of Steve Rogers.
Most speculation surrounding what role Evans could play in Doomsday taps into the idea that he’s an evil version of Captain America. In Marvel Comics, Steve Rogers became a member of Hydra for a time, operating as a villainous version of his typically heroic Captain America character. This take on the character could be adapted for Avengers: Doomsday and could potentially team up with RDJ’s Doctor Doom to take on Marvel’s movie heroes.
Our Take On Chris Evans Potentially Returning In Avengers: Doomsday
I’d Love To See It Happen!
Arguably, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans are the three original pillars of the MCU, and after the cast announcement kicked off confirming Hemsworth’s return, that leaves Evans as the last remaining holdout. However, it would be perfect symmetry if the Avengers: Doomsday casting announcement ends with Chris Evans. That reveal would be the perfect ʙuттon on the five-hour-plus event, and ensure the original trio of Marvel actors return for the Avengers movie.
Beyond that, Evans returning for Avengers: Doomsday would make it that much more of an event film. So far, the extensive cast list consists of characters from across the MCU and the Fox X-Men universe, making it a mᴀssive Marvel event film. While there are still currently major Marvel movie actors missing (including all Spider-Man actors), Evans is one MCU star that I would hate to see left out of Avengers: Doomsday. So hopefully this casting announcement ends with the confirmation of Chris Evans in Avengers: Doomsday.
