“I Didn’t Cause Problems”: Ben Affleck Addresses What Went Wrong With His Batman And Explains Why He No Longer Wants To Be Involved In Superhero Movies

Ben Affleck reveals he is done with superhero movies for good after his stint as the Batman of the old DCEU. Before being added to the list of live-action Bruce Wayne actors, Affleck gave life to Daredevil in a solo Marvel movie. As such, the actor has experience in both of the biggest superhero franchises out there. As Batman, Affleck had a well-documented rough time, with the production of 2017’s Justice League being a messy affair for all actors involved. Affleck’s Batman movie was cancelled, and the actor never really got to reach the heights he could have.

Speaking with GQ, Ben Affleck addressed the personal reasons why he does not want to return as Batman or appear in another superhero movie. The actor was firm about his decision, claiming he lost interest in the aspects of the superhero genre that previously spoke to him. Affleck also delved into the issues he faced during his time as Batman, but did not solely blame DC and the executives for how things did not work out. According to Affleck, he had “significant failings” of his own and brought “a lot of unhappiness” to work, though he did not cause problems. Check out the full quote below:

“I loved doing the Batman movie. In terms of creatively, I really think that I like the idea and the ambition I had for it, which was of the sort of older, broken, damaged Bruce Wayne. And it was something we really went for in the first movie. But what happened was it started to skew too old for a big part of the audience. Like even my own son at the time was too scared to watch the movie. And so when I saw that, I was like, ‘Oh s—, we have a problem.’

I am not interested in going down that particular genre again, not because of that bad experience, but just: I’ve lost interest in what was of interest about it to me. But I certainly wouldn’t want to replicate an experience like that. A lot of it was misalignment of agendas, understandings, expectations. And also by the way, I wasn’t bringing anything particularly wonderful to that equation at the time, either. I had my own failings, significant failings, in that process and at that time… in terms of why I had a bad experience, part of it is that what I was bringing to work every day was a lot of unhappiness. So I wasn’t bringing a lot of positive energy to the equation. I didn’t cause problems, but I came in and I did my job and I went home. But you’ve got to do a little bit better than that.”

What Ben Affleck’s Superhero Movie Comments Mean

Both Marvel And DC Will Be Unable To Use The Actor

Affleck’s superhero movie comments come at a time when the actor has no possible project to return to in the genre. His Batman was at one point going to be phased out of the DCEU for Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne to take over. Now that the plans have changed, Robert Pattinson will remain as The Batman franchise’s Dark Knight, while a new actor will take on the role for James Gunn’s DC Universe — starting with Batman’s The Brave and the Bold movie. Affleck would have no way of playing Batman again.

As for his Marvel chances, Affleck’s Daredevil was interestingly part of concept art for ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine. Based on how Affleck does not want to be part of superhero movies again, it seems like his return as Matt Murdock in one of the upcoming Avengers movies, which are expected to include several multiverse characters, is out of the cards. The actor’s comments also show that he is ready to move on from the headspace he was in when filming his Batman appearances, which he claims did not help his performances as Bruce Wayne.

Our Take On Ben Affleck’s Superhero Movie Comments

Batman Will Likely Be His Final Superhero Role

Based on how personal the reasons why he does not want to return to superhero movies are, I can’t see Affleck getting back into the Batman suit or portraying another character in the genre again. I’m okay with that, as the actor brought to life exciting versions of both Batman and Daredevil. While I would have loved to see his Batman movie that never got made, I believe that if Ben Affleck no longer feels interested in the genre, having him back for a quick cameo in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga or something else would feel hollow.
