Ralph Macchio Says My Cousin Vinny Reboot Conversations Have Started: “It’s About Finding The Smart Angle In”

Ralph Macchio has said that My Cousin Vinny reboot conversations have begun, the actor explaining what important elements would need to be involved in the new version. The 1992 legal comedy sees Macchio’s Bill Gambini get arrested for a murder he didn’t commit, leading him to seek defense through his cousin, Vinny (Joe Pesci), a newly-approved lawyer. Vinny is considered one of Pesci’s most iconic roles, with the film being both a critical and financial success when it was released. However, it never received any film continuation despite how well it performed.

Speaking with People, however, Macchio revealed there have been talks about a My Cousin Vinny reboot, the actor explaining he’s spoken to writers in Hollywood about the project. In terms of progress, the actor said the current focus is determining what a “smart angle” for the new movie would be. He also acknowledged that Pesci would need to be involved in some capacity, even if he just appeared for a cameo. Check out what Macchio had to say below:

Yeah, I’ve had conversations with other writers about that…. Yeah, that one’s a beloved piece. It’s about finding the smart angle in.

[Pesci] could FaceTime it in here.

What My Cousin Vinny Reboot Talks Mean For The Project

The Proposed Movie Still Has A Long Way To Go

There was a previous attempt to make a sequel to My Cousin Vinny, with original film writer Dan Launer revealing a script had been written that sees Vinny tackle a case in England. However, star Marisa Tomei, who portrayed the main character’s girlfriend, Mona Lisa Vito, dropped out of the project. While the script was going to be rewritten without her inclusion, it ultimately never went forward. However, author Lawrence Kelter has been writing a book series about the main duo since 2017, showing them tackling a variety of new cases in modern times.

Based on what Macchio said, however, it sounds like the original movie will be remade instead of a sequel happening, with Pesci no longer in the тιтular role. Even so, the star clearly wants him involved in the movie, even if the story and characters end up being fairly different from the original. While the Home Alone actor appearing would be fun, the movie is clearly in its early days, with the film’s idea still being a proposal that doesn’t have anyone officially attached to it yet.

Our Take On My Cousin Vinny Reboot Talks

Is A New Movie Necessary?

Joe Pesci in My Cousin Vinny

Macchio’s ideas for Pesci to be involved in a My Cousin Vinny reboot indicates the actor has a lot of pᴀssion for the project, finding a way to honor its legacy. However, given how much of a classic ’90s comedy it is, a modern take on the film will have a difficult time measuring up to its predecessor. It won’t be an easy task to remake the film and make it as memorable, but it’s nice to know one of its original actors is hopeful for the project’s future.
