Michael Fᴀssbender Reflects On Infamous 19% RT Action Movie Bomb As It Continues To Dominate Streaming Charts

Michael Fᴀssbender has been in some great films throughout his career. A two-time Oscar nominee (for Steve Jobs and 12 Years A Slave), Fᴀssbender has contributed his talents both to mainstream work like the X-Men franchise, where he plays a younger version of Magneto, and to art films like Shame. Most recently, the actor was in the Steven Soderbergh spy drama Black Bag, which has gotten a positive reception overall. Screen Rant‘s Mae Abdulbaki offered a particularly positive review of Black Bag, giving it 8 out of 10 stars and praising the thriller’s comedy elements.

Despite his highs, Fᴀssbender has also had his fair share of misses in his career. His lowest-rated movie of all time was 2017’s The Snowman, a flop so infamous that it was spoofed in the Lonely Island Oscar tribute “Why Not Me.” Other lackluster Fᴀssbender movies include Jonah Hex and the 2019 X-Men installment Dark Phoenix. Now, Fᴀssbender reflects on another one of his poorly reviewed movies that has recently been seeing a comeback on streaming.

Fᴀssbender Reflects On ᴀssᴀssin’s Creed

The Movie Did Not Turn Out How The Actor Would Have Liked

Fᴀssbender reflects on his 2016 action film ᴀssᴀssin’s Creed. Based on the video game of the same name, ᴀssᴀssin’s Creed is a sci-fi adventure that is focuses on a man named Callum Lynch who explores the memories of his ancestor to gain the skills of a Master ᴀssᴀssin. In addition to Fᴀssbender, the movie features a leading cast including Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, and Charlotte Rampling. Despite its star-studded cast, ᴀssᴀssin’s Creed got terrible reviews, scoring a mere 19% on Rotten Tomatoes.

ᴀssᴀssin’s Creed made $240.6 million worldwide on an estimated $125 million budget.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Fᴀssbender reflects on ᴀssᴀssin’s Creed. While the actor did say that he and the team had “a lot of fun” on the set of the film, he admits that the film was not a success. Fᴀssbender notes that the film “didn’t turn out the way [he] hoped it to do.” Still, Fᴀssbender thinks ᴀssᴀssin’s Creed has such “an interesting universe” that it was worth exploring. Check out the full quote from Fᴀssbender below:

ᴀssᴀssin’s Creed didn’t turn out the way I hoped it to do. I think it’s such an interesting universe. The idea of DNA memory, I really believe in that. The idea of free will as a concept. I had a lot of fun doing it. It reminds me of being on the rooftops in Malta, very H๏τ conditions, sweating a lot. We had a lot of fun.

What This Means For ᴀssᴀssin’s Creed

The Movie Has Been Doing Well On Streaming

Fᴀssbender’s quote comes at a time when the video game adaptation film has generally been doing well on streaming. At the time of writing, ᴀssᴀssin’s Creed is the no. 2 movie on Max in the United States today, falling behind only the 2024 horror hit Heretic. Even though the movie was not well-received in theaters, Fᴀssbender‘s thought that the movie still presents fascinating ideas is clearly also still resonant with viewers, who are re-exploring the film nine years later.
