Daredevil: Born Again Star Charlie Cox Reveals He And Andrew Garfield Texted About Their Secretive Cameos In Spider-Man: No Way Home

Spider-Man: No Way Home was notorious for the amount of hype and speculation surrounding its release in 2021. Given its multiversal stakes and inclusion of past Spider-Man film antagonists, many fans suspected that previous franchise leads Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would also appear, further supported by online leaks. Upon Spider-Man: No Way Home hitting theaters, audiences were treated to cameos from not just Maguire and Garfield, but also Daredevil star Charlie Cox.

During the marketing cycle for the film, Garfield vocally denied any involvement with Spider-Man: No Way Home to the extent that it became a meme. However, this secrecy did not extend to Cox, who is friends with Garfield. According to a GQ interview with the Daredevil: Born Again lead, the two shared a humorous text exchange as Cox correctly guessed that Garfield was in the film. He explained:

“I got to Atlanta still in the middle of COVID, so I had to do the two-week isolation. So I got to the H๏τel, and I texted my friend Andrew Garfield, who I knew was in the film—it was rumored he was in the film—and I was like ‘I think we’re doing a film together.’ And he wrote back ‘No, I don’t think so, buddy, I’m doing SM.’ And I’m like ‘Yeah, we’re doing a film together.’ And he was like ‘No, no, no, I’m doing Spider-Man.’ And I’m like ‘I’m also doing Spider-Man.’ And then he writes back ‘You’re not in my script.’ I wrote ‘Well, I’m in mine.'”

What Charlie Cox’s Comments About Andrew Garfield And Spider-Man: No Way Home Mean

Marvel is notoriously secretive about their films, so it makes sense that, in an effort to reduce leaks, not every actor and character is listed in every version of the script. Additionally, Cox’s cameo was confined to a singular scene, while Garfield and Maguire were major supporting players in the back half of the film. Omitting Cox’s cameo from the script or redacting the character’s name would be much easier than it would have been with Garfield’s Spider-Man for this reason.

However, it is still hilarious that Garfield showed disbelief at Cox’s saying they were both in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Not only is that amusing, but so is the former very readily admitting he was in the film, in spite of denying it elsewhere.

Interestingly, Cox previously revealed that he’d discussed his Spider-Man: No Way Home cameo with another star. He explained: “One of my first phone calls, and I knew I could tell him because I also knew he knew, was Tom Hiddleston, he’s one of my best friends.” As a result, it’s safe to say there’s honor among thieves when it comes to MCU actors keeping each other’s secrets.

Our Take On Charlie Cox’s Comments About Andrew Garfield And Spider-Man: No Way Home

Tom Holland's Spider-Man with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men in No Way Home

With all of its cameos and surprises, Spider-Man: No Way Home is a special movie in terms of how it reverently blends old and new Marvel properties. It’s understandable why Marvel would keep mum in order to keep spoilers from leaking. Nonetheless, hearing how Cox and Garfield discovered each other’s involvement with the film via text is a funny reminder that even its cast members don’t always know all of the MCU’s secrets.
