Metamorpho actor Anthony Carrigan explains why he feels happy to be part of a DCU project as lighthearted and hopeful as James Gunn’s Superman. Anthony Carrigan’s Metamorpho is part of Superman‘s packed cast, where the shapeshifting hero will be introduced as a member of Mister Terrific’s superhero team alongside the Green Lantern Guy Gardner and Hawkgirl. James Gunn’s Superman marks the first time Metamorpho appears in live-action. Anthony Carrigan’s Rex Mason a.k.a. Metamorpho only appears in a brief sH๏τ of Superman‘s first trailer, which raises expectations around Metamorpho’s full comic-accurate look in the DCU.
In an interview with ComicBookMovie.com, Metamorpho actor Anthony Carrigan praises James Gunn’s Superman for its “uplifting” nature, arguing that it “inspires such hope.” Carrigan also stars in Mike Otts’ 2025 psychological thriller McVeigh, which is the complete opposite in tone to Gunn’s Superman. “I mean, honestly, the only thing I can say is just what a joy it was to work on a project like that,” Carrigan says in the video above. “I’m so excited to obviously bring something like McVeigh to audiences, but also something that inspires such hope and is really about something very uplifting.”
What Anthony Carrigan’s Superman Comments Mean
Hope Is A Central Theme To James Gunn’s Superman
James Gunn’s filmography is well known for its sense of humor, its pop culture references, and even its body horror inspirations. While Superman will probably feature many traditional Gunn elements, Gunn is putting special emphasis on the character’s central theme. Hope has always been a staple of Superman movies and shows, but some of them have been less effective at conveying it than others. A light, colorful, and unapologetically fun approach to Superman seems to be a priority in James Gunn’s Superman, and it will probably be reflected in the DCU movie’s script, cinematography, score, action sequences, and performances.
Our Take On Anthony Carrigan’s Superman Comments
A Hopeful And Uplifting Superman Movie Is The Best Way To Launch The DCU
James Gunn’s filmography is well known for its sense of humor, its pop culture references, and even its body horror inspirations. While Superman will probably feature many traditional Gunn elements, Gunn is putting special emphasis on the character’s central theme. Hope has always been a staple of Superman movies and shows, but some of them have been less effective at conveying it than others. An uplifting Superman movie provides a huge contrast to a thriller like McVeigh, as Anthony Carrigan says. Superman will also provide a similar contrast to other upcoming DCU projects like the horror-inspired Clayface and the possibly darker Lanterns, Waller, and The Brave and the Bold.
Another exciting detail about an interconnected franchise like the DCU is that characters aren’t strictly attached to their installment of origin. Characters like Metamorpho, Mister Terrific, and Superman himself could star in darker, more comical, or more realistic DCU projects in the future — all while still retaining the character arc started in Superman. Likewise, characters like Batman, John Stewart, and Amanda Waller could display a more colorful side of their personalities in an eventual Superman sequel.
