I desperately want the 2015 film Spy, which stars Jason Statham in a rare comedic role, to get a sequel. While Statham has emerged as one of the most popular action stars of this century, he has also starred in a few comedy movies. Jason Statham’s best comedy movies include Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, and the aforementioned Spy. While Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch feature the unique comedy of director Guy Ritchie, Spy is a much more traditional comedy film, in which Statham is a standout.
In addition to Statham, the cast of Spy includes Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law, and Rose Byrne. The story of the film follows a CIA analyst, Susan Cooper, who has no choice but to leave her desk to capture the people responsible for the murder of her favorite agent. Even though he’s not necessarily known for the comedy genre, Spy is actually the highest-rated movie of Jason Statham’s career. Additionally, Spy has been a streaming hit recently, which proves that the 2015 action comedy film needs a sequel.
Even After 10 Years, Jason Statham’s Spy Movie Deserves A Sequel
Spy Is Still A Very Popular Comedy Movie
Compared to some other genres, it’s much harder for comedy movies to have high Rotten Tomatoes scores due to the fact that they are not always taken very seriously. However, Spy has an extremely impressive score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes (via Rotten Tomatoes). This score, in addition to the fact that it is still a hit on streaming ten years after its release, proves that Spy deserves a sequel.
Statham and McCarthy have amazing chemistry in Spy, which could be further explored in a sequel.
In the film, Statham plays Rick Ford, an arrogant but hilarious CIA agent who disagrees with sending Susan on a mission. After quitting, Rick ends up going rogue and constantly messes with Susan’s mission throughout the course of the film. Statham and McCarthy have amazing chemistry in Spy, which could be further explored in a sequel. This is especially the case since the movie’s post-credits scene reveals that they had Sєx. Therefore, a sequel to Spy could explore their dynamic after this hilarious ending.
Another Paul Feig Move Gives Me Hope That Spy 2 Can Happen
Another Simple Favor Is The First Sequel Paul Feig Has Ever Directed
Spy is directed by Paul Feig, who has also helmed iconic comedy movies such as Bridesmaids. Since the release of Spy, there have been rumors of a sequel, but nothing has ever been confirmed by Feig or any of the actors. It’s now been ten years since the release of the movie, so it may seem unlikely that a sequel will ever be made. However, Feig recently directed Another Simple Favor, which is a sequel to one of his movies from seven years ago.
Since 2018’s A Simple Favor is receiving a sequel in 2025, I still have hope that Spy could get a sequel. The upcoming Another Simple Favor proves that Feig is not opposed to directing sequels. Therefore, I am hoping that he will pursue a sequel to Spy next. This would be amazing, as Spy is undoubtedly one of the best movies of Feig’s career, and one of the funniest comedies of the last decade.
