The Great Wall (2016) is an epic action-fantasy film directed by the visionary Zhang Yimou. Set during ancient China’s Song Dynasty, the movie stars Matt Damon as William, a skilled European mercenary, alongside Jing Tian and Andy Lau in leading roles. The story follows William and his companion Tovar, portrayed by Pedro Pascal, as they journey to China in search of the legendary “black powder” (gunpowder), only to be captured by an elite military force known as the Nameless Order.
The Nameless Order, stationed at the Great Wall of China, harbors a secret that William and Tovar could never have anticipated: the Wall is not merely a defense against human invaders but is the last line of defense against a terrifying species of monstrous creatures known as the Taotie. These vicious, relentless beasts emerge every sixty years in mᴀssive waves, threatening to decimate all of humanity.
As the Taotie prepare for their largest ᴀssault yet, William and Tovar must decide whether to stand and fight alongside the Nameless Order or attempt to flee.
