Out of Africa (1985) is an epic romantic drama directed by Sydney Pollack, based on the autobiographical book by Karen Blixen (published under the pen name Isak Dinesen). The film stars Meryl Streep as Karen Blixen and Robert Redford as Denys Finch Hatton.
In the early 20th century, Karen Blixen, a Danish baroness and writer, moves to British East Africa (now Kenya) with her husband, Baron Bror Blixen (Klaus Maria Brandauer). They intend to establish a dairy farm, but Bror instead invests in a coffee plantation. Their marriage is largely one of convenience, as Bror is more interested in hunting and socializing than in their relationship.

Life in Africa & Marriage Troubles:
Karen takes on the responsibilities of managing the coffee plantation, interacting with the local Kikuyu people, and immersing herself in African culture. However, her marriage begins to fall apart due to Bror’s infidelity and lack of commitment. She eventually contracts syphilis from him, forcing her to return to Denmark for treatment.
Romance with Denys Finch Hatton:
Upon returning to Africa, Karen falls in love with Denys Finch Hatton, a free-spirited British big-game hunter. Unlike Bror, Denys is cultured, adventurous, and values freedom over material possessions. Their relationship deepens as he introduces her to his world of safari expeditions, poetry, and classical music (symbolized by his love for Mozart).
However, Denys refuses to be tied down to a conventional life, rejecting Karen’s desire for stability and commitment. Despite their love for each other, their differences create tension.
Karen faces financial struggles due to poor crop yields and a devastating fire that destroys the coffee plantation. As her dreams of building a life in Africa fall apart, she is also forced to confront her emotions when Denys tragically dies in a plane crash.
With her plantation ruined and Denys gone, Karen decides to leave Africa and return to Denmark. In the final scene, she bids farewell to her beloved land, heartbroken but forever changed by her experiences. The film closes with her narration, reflecting on her time in Africa and the love she had for the land and people.
