Where Dorothy Is During Wicked

Even though she was included in trailers for the movie, Dorothy does not have a major role in Wicked. Instead of Dorothy, who was the main character of the iconic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, Wicked focuses on the relationship between Elphaba and Glinda. Wicked is based on the Broadway musical of the same name, as well as the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Since the film’s release, Elphaba and Glinda have proven to be just as popular as Dorothy, and will appear again in the upcoming Wicked: For Good.

At the end of Wicked, Elphaba and Glinda learn that the Wizard and Madame Morrible are behind the mistreatment of animals in Oz, which puts their friendship to the test. While Elphaba flies away to start a revolt against the Wizard and Madame Morrible, who are two of the most powerful figures in the world of Oz, Glinda stays behind in Emerald City. The story of the upcoming sequel will bring us closer to the events of The Wizard of Oz, which means that Dorothy could show up in Wicked: For Good.

Dorothy Is Still In Kansas During The Bulk Of Wicked’s Story

Wicked’s Story Takes Place Before The Wizard Of Oz

The beginning of Wicked actually takes place at the end of Elphaba and Glinda’s story, and features the latter reflecting on their relationship in Munchkinland. Since Elphaba, also known as the Wicked Witch of the West, seemingly dies at the hands of Dorothy, Glinda sings about her former friend. Also, since this scene takes place after most of the events of the forthcoming Wicked: For Good, it makes sense that Dorothy makes a cameo at the beginning of the first Wicked movie.

During the main timeline of Wicked, Dorothy is still in Kansas.

At the beginning of Wicked, Dorothy can be seen with Elphaba’s broom in hand as she walks towards Emerald City with Toto, The Tin Man, The Scarecrow, and The Cowardly Lion. Including this group was a major Wizard of Oz Easter egg in Wicked, but they are not seen again at any other point in the film. In fact, during the main timeline of Wicked, Dorothy is still in Kansas, which is where she is at the beginning of the iconic 1939 film.

Why Dorothy Isn’t In Wicked Beyond The Opening Cameo

Wicked Follows Elphaba & Glinda

Not long before the sH๏τ of Dorothy and the other Wizard of Oz characters is included in Wicked, a silhouette of her throwing water on the Wicked Witch of the West is also seen. This sH๏τ proves that Dorothy will play a prominent role that leads to Elphaba’s eventual fate in Wicked: For Good. However, the rest of the movie is not meant to focus on Dorothy. Instead, Wicked follows the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda, who meet as students at Shiz University.

The two friends are students at Shiz University years before Dorthy arrives in the land of Oz. The 1995 novel is actually set 40 years before the events of The Wizard of Oz. However, the Wicked movie timeline is different from the book. While it is not explicitly stated, Wicked is probably set about a decade before Dorothy walks the Yellow Brick Road in Oz. Therefore, since it predates her story by many years, there is no reason for Dorothy to be included in Wicked other than the brief glimpses of her at the beginning of the film.

Will Dorothy Play A Bigger Role In Wicked 2?

Dorothy Will Likely Once Again Appear In Wicked: For Good

While Dorothy is only briefly seen in Wicked, a bigger role for her was teased in the film’s trailers. In the trailers for Wicked, sH๏τs of Dorothy and her friends entering Emerald City and speaking to the Wizard were included. Supposedly, these scenes were cut out of the first film and will instead be included in Wicked: For Good. This seemingly confirms that Dorothy will have a bigger role in the upcoming sequel.

Wicked: For Good will be released on November 21, 2025 and will conclude Elphaba and Glinda’s stories.

However, even though Dorothy will be featured more in Wicked: For Good, it is unlikely that she will be one of the main characters in the movie. Additionally, it is currently unknown whether the sequel will actually show Dorothy’s face. There’s a chance that all of her scenes in Wicked: For Good will only show her from behind, which would allow audiences to only picture the face of Judy Garland, who played the iconic character in The Wizard of Oz. Therefore, while Dorothy will appear in the sequel to Wicked, she likely won’t have a major role in the movie.
