I’m a little concerned after Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse‘s first update of 2025 seems to throw further doubt on the Marvel movie. After Kraven the Hunter‘s record-setting poor performance, Sony announced that all movies in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe would be put on indefinite hold, essentially confirming that the franchise is now defunct. Thankfully, this does not extend to its animated Spider-Verse movies starring Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales and Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy, with Sony Pictures Animation still ostensibly forging ahead with the trilogy. With that being said, the studio is certainly taking its time.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was released almost two years ago in June 2025, earning a similar degree of acclaim to its prequel, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, particularly for its animation style. It arguably ended on a far more nail-biting cliffhanger, however, as Miles Morales found himself trapped in another universe where a variant of himself has become that universe’s Prowler. Despite this turn of events, it looks like we’re still looking at a long wait until we discover how Morales’ predicament plays out.
Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse’s Original Release Date Was Almost A Year Ago
The Original Release Date Was March 29, 2024.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was released in December 2018. One year later, Sony revealed that a sequel was en route before further details emerged in December 2021 that it would be split into two separate movies due to the sheer scale of the story. This was when Sony announced the тιтle Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One), revealed in a report by Entertainment Weekly, with a late 2022 release date. Its sequel, then named Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part Two), was given a release date of one year later, in 2023.
Plans were further changed in April 2022, when Sony announced Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse would be released in June 2023. This was when Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was given its current тιтle, and a release date of March 29, 2024. While Sony stuck to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse‘s release date, here we are one year after the last announced release date for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, and recent updates haven’t exactly suggested that its development is speeding along.
The First Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse’s Update Of 2025 Is Concerning
The Miles G. Morales Voice Actor Is The Most Recent Contributor To Weigh In
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse introduced a new voice actor into the franchise, Jharrel Jerome, who voices Miles Morales’ sinister variant, Miles G. Morales of Earth-42. Despite his minimal role thus far, it is safe to ᴀssume that he will play a much larger one in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse due to his set-up in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Unfortunately, when Jerome spoke recently in an interview with Decider, he had very little to update, revealing that he hadn’t even started work on the movie. When asked if it was in production, Jerome stated:
“No, I wish. We haven’t started up yet. A lot of things being figured out, but good things.”
Miles G. Morales became the Prowler after the radioactive spider that was supposed to bite him was teleported to Earth-1610.
This mirrors what Jerome told ScreenRant in December, where he stated “I’m as much in the dark as you.” Without confirmation on if and when he’ll be called in to record his lines, it’s still difficult to estimate when Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is intended to be released. This is compounded by the fact that Sony pulled the movie from its upcoming release schedule without giving it a new release date.
On a more positive note, however, Pavitr Prabhakar’s voice actor, Karan Soni, suggested in August 2024 that the movie was deep into production. Additionally, producer Christopher Miller and composer Daniel Pemberton refuted reports that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse had been gutted and reᴀssembled, with its release falling no earlier than 2027. Whatever the case, there is no denying that its development is taking some time – but this is for good reason.
Why Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse Is Taking So Long
The Award-Winning Animation Takes Time To Achieve
In short, making movies this good takes time. Unlike many of its live-action offerings, Sony’s animated Spider-Verse franchise has earned widespread acclaim, and pulling this off is no mean feat. Proponents praise its animation in particular, but the creative decision to animate each part of the multiverse differently extends that entire process. If the Spider-Verse filmmakers additionally intend to improve on the preceding movies, this is likely to prolong the process even further.
It is also worth remembering that this lead time still falls within the timeframe between Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel, which was nearly five years in the making.
Extraneous factors like the SAG-AFTRA strikes of summer 2023 might have also impacted the overall schedule. If this is the case, then it at least seems Sony has made some significant alterations and/or additions to a story that was initially intended to be the second part to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. We can at least rest ᴀssured that this is probably for the best as the filmmakers will no doubt intend for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse to be as high-quality of a sequel as it can be.
It is also worth remembering that this lead time still falls within the timeframe between Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel, which was nearly five years in the making. Despite Miller and Pemberton refuting claims that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse had been overhauled, it remains possible that the 2027 release prediction is accurate. In fact, if it emulated the precedent set by the first two movies, we might even be looking at a 2028 release date. Whatever the case, it would be great if Sony could confirm one way or the other.
When Sony Might Reveal More About Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse
An Upcoming Event Is Likely To Reveal More
I’m ultimately happy if Sony is intentionally taking its time with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. A little more careful consideration can only be a good thing, and I’m confident that the long lead-time will bear out in the quality of the movie. What I would like, however, is for Sony to confirm a release date so we know exactly when to expect the finale to the celebrated Spider-Man trilogy. Thankfully, one upcoming event could be the perfect stage for Sony to unveil its plans.
CinemaCon is just around the corner, taking place from March 31–April 3. This is a go-to event for Sony to showcase its upcoming releases, with movies like Venom: The Last Dance and the unmade El Muerto being announced here in previous years. With the Spider-Verse franchise’s large fandom awaiting news on the new movie with bated breath, I would be surprised if Sony wasn’t gearing up to deliver some form of an update at this event in particular.
Failing this, I can’t help but feel that Jerome’s comments mean that Sony is still biding its time. Perhaps the studio waiting for the dust to settle on the less-than-favorable response to its live-action Spider-Man franchise before reinvigorating the IP with another strong animated installment. Whatever the case, I think we all need an update to Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse sooner rather than later, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
