The movie’s European premiere, for example, took place in Segovia, Spain at an out-of-the-way castle compared to London as previous big Disney premieres have. Most media outlets were also not invited to the event, significantly scaling back on the number of people who would actually attend. There are no red carpet interviews with journalists, but instead, a handful of one-on-one interviews from earlier press junkets for the movie. Even the pH๏τographers for the Los Angeles premiere were Disney’s own in-house pH๏τographers (via BBC).

Less in-person events are likely by design to cut down on the possibility of protests or demonstrations on the carpet in relation to any of the controversies that have marred the lead-up to the film’s release date. It is likely Disney taking a calculated risk to keep everyone involved in those events safe.

While Disney undoubtedly wants a movie with a $200 million+ budget to do well at the box office, it’s possible that they did not want to overspend on promoting the film when it has already spent so much time in the press for negative reasons already. All of that press, even with negative social media remarks, does still increase the buzz for the movie and still has loyal Disney fans interested in seeing the final product.
