The animated Stone Age comedy movies The Croods and The Croods 2 make for ideal family-friendly movies to watch at home. Released in 2013, The Croods tells the story of a prehistoric family living in a fictionalized ancient period. The first film depicts the patriarch Grug (Nicolas Cage) and his family as they explore the wider world beyond their cave. The Croods led to a franchise that includes The Croods 2 (also known as The Croods: A New Age), which expanded the animated world, and two TV shows, Dawn of the Croods and The Croods: Family Tree.
The Croods franchise has lingered despite its historical inaccuracies because of the heart-warming family dynamics at its core. While it presents a fun prehistoric world filled with comedic potential, it’s the resonant themes of the story that keep the series so long-lived. Grug doesn’t like change and worries about new experiences, while his children, wife, and mother are much more outgoing. It’s a simple but effective dynamic, and combines with the fantastic art for an exciting franchise that everyone can find a reason to love. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to watch The Croods and The Croods 2.
Where To Stream The Croods Movies
Only The First Movie Is Available To Stream
The Croods is available to stream on Peacock, having been added to the streaming platform in March 2025. Subscriptions to the service come in two tiers, “Premium”, which includes ads, for $5.99/month, and “Premium Plus”, which removes ads, for $11.99/month. Unfortunately, The Croods 2 is not currently available for streaming so fans hoping to find the franchise on one of their streaming platforms will have to settle for just the first film.
Both films are rated PG for some action violence, typical of many animated children’s movies, and certainly expected of a series set in a time period with plenty of dangerous creatures to fight while hanging out with The Croods‘ characters.

Where To Watch The Croods TV Shows
There Are Two Series Available To Stream
There are two TV shows in The Croods franchise: Dawn of the Croods and The Croods: Family Tree. Dawn of the Croods is a 2-D animated series made for Netflix and all four seasons of the show are available on the streaming service. However, the series can also be purchased on Apple TV+, Amazon, and Google Play. The Croods: Family Tree is available to stream on Hulu and Peacock, but it is not available for purchase at this time.
Dawn of the Croods takes place before the first film while The Croods: Family Tree is set after the events of The Croods 2. While the A-list members of the original two movies, like Oscar winner Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds, don’t reprise their roles in the series, these shows are still worthwhile entries into The Croods franchise.
