Ben Affleck’s $155M Action Thriller Becomes Streaming Hit Ahead Of Sequel’s Release

Ben Affleck remains one of the most recognizable actors working in Hollywood. Some of his most notable early movies include Dazed and Confused (1993), Chasing Amy (1997), and Good Will Hunting (1997), the last of which won him and Matt Damon a Best Screenplay Oscar. With the release of Michael Bay’s Armageddon in 1998, though, Affleck became more than just a talented actor – he became a movie star.

Following Armageddon, Affleck played the lead in Pearl Harbor (2001) before playing iconic Tom Clancy hero Jack Ryan in The Sum of All Fears (2002). That led to the infamous Daredevil in 2003, which was not well-received, but Affleck remained a compelling leading man, appearing in hits like The Town (2010), Argo (2012), and Gone Girl (2014). He even went on to earn praise for his performance as Batman in several DCU movies. Not long after his debut as the iconic Caped Crusader, though, Affleck appeared in an action thriller that has since developed something of a cult following.

The Accountant

has become a streaming hit ahead of the release of the long-awaited follow-up. Directed by Gavin O’Connor, the 2016 action thriller features Affleck in the lead role as Christian Wolff, an autistic math savant with ᴅᴇᴀᴅly combat skills who takes on a job uncooking the books for a dangerous client. The film was a box office success at the time, grossing $155 million worldwide despite mixed reviews from critics, but it has since developed a pᴀssionate fan following. This led to confirmation of The Accountant 2, which hits theaters on April 25.

As the wait continues for the sequel, new data from FlixPatrol reveals that The Accountant ranks as the fifth most popular movie on Prime Video in the U.S. today, March 20. The action flick comes ahead of movies like My Fault: London (2025), The Meg (2018), and Behind Enemy Lines (2001), but falls short of other тιтles like The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), Jurᴀssic World (2015), and Picture This (2025). When looking at both movies and TV shows, The Accountant falls down to ninth place. Check out the top 10 movies list below:

What The Accountant’s Streaming Success Means For The Sequel

Will It Repeat The Original’s Success?

Though it’s been almost 10 years since The Accountant‘s ending seemingly wrapped up the story of Affleck’s Christian Wolff, there does seem to be anticipation regarding the sequel. The fact that audiences are revisiting the original could indicate that the follow-up will find success in theaters. The Accountant 2 brings back some key elements from the original, including Jon Bernthal as Christian’s brother, Brax, and Cynthia Addai-Robinson as Marybeth Medina, with a story that follows Christian and Brax as they investigate the death of J.K. Simmons’ Ray King.

Another positive sign is that The Accountant 2 reviews have been more positive than those for the original movie. Following the sequel’s premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival earlier this month, it debuted on Rotten Tomatoes to a score of 84%, a significant jump up from the original’s 53%. Though it’s unclear whether The Accountant‘s sequel will be able to achieve the same level of box office success, the signs are certainly looking promising.
