The first teaser trailer for the superhero dark comedy splatter The Toxic Avenger has been unveiled. Starring Peter Dinklage as the тιтular character, the upcoming Toxic Avenger reboot adapts Troma Entertainment’s original 1984 movie with a meek janitor, renamed Winston, who transforms into a deformed yet powerful vigilante. Written and directed by Macon Blair, the new version of the satirical superhero horror film also stars Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, Kevin Bacon, and Taylour Paige. The film first screened at Fantastic Fest in September 2023 and will now see a broader theatrical release on August 29.
Troma Entertainment has released the first trailer for Toxic Avenger, beginning as an advertisement for an offbeat burger joint before Winston emerges to deliver blood-filled justice. The trailer appears to embrace its B-movie roots, combining outrageous violence, a highly suggestive burger tower, and a campy, radioactive aesthetic reminiscent of the original cult classic. What This Means For Toxic Avenger
The Trailer Embraces Its Gross Roots
The newly released Toxic Avenger trailer makes it clear that the reboot is staying true to the outrageous tone of the original film. The teaser kicks off as a commercial for Miss Meat, a fictional fast food joint, where two workers enthusiastically present their bizarre menu with a tuna taco, a wet burrito, and a towering burger called “The Big C–k.” However, the comedic commercial quickly takes a dark turn as the trailer transitions to a scene directly inspired by the original with a proudly tasteless showdown even nastier than Prime Video’s superhero parody series The Boys.
In the trailer, a group of armed terrorists storms Miss Meat before Toxie makes his entrance. One of the terrorists dismisses him as “some dude with a mop,” a mistake that proves fatal when Toxie immediately delivers a gruesome blow and knocks his jaw clean off. The over-the-top violence mixed with slapstick humor affirms the delayed Toxic Avenger movie’s commitment to the absurdist, gory spectacle that made the 1984 film a cult classic. Clad in tattered clothing and brandishing his signature glowing mop, Winston is every bit the monstrous antihero.
Our Take On Toxic Avenger’s Newest Trailer
Toxie Is A Monstrous Sight To Behold
The newly released Toxic Avenger trailer proves that the reboot is fully embracing the spirit of the original. While modern reboots can often veer too far into CGI, director Macon Blair has opted for practical effects to bring Winston/Toxie and his vigilantism to life. Evoking the grimy aesthetic of the ’80s classic, The Toxic Avenger looks poised to deliver a refreshingly gnarly take on the superhero genre where not all heroes wear capes—some carry a mop, leave a trail of toxic sludge, and splatter bad guys in the goriest way possible.
