Matrix 5 Can Finally Settle A 22-Year-Old Debate About Keanu Reeves’ Neo That Came From The Franchise’s Most Confusing Scene

There are some mysteries that The Matrix never quite resolved, but The Matrix 5 movie could finally shed some light on them. Since the launch of the very first Matrix movie in 1999, the story has been complex and profound, asking if there is evidence for a machine takeover behind the scenes and if humans have free will. By the end of The Matrix trilogy, finishing with The Matrix Revolutions in 2003, Keanu Reeves’ Neo was one of the most famous and mysterious main characters in Hollywood history — and The Matrix 5 will continue to tell his story.

Every Matrix movie stars Reeves alongside Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, who loves Neo across various versions of reality and between life and death. It was always a complex dilemma to estimate whether Trinity loved Neo because he was the One or whether he was the One because Trinity loved him, with Gloria Foster’s Oracle prophesizing that the One would be loved by Trinity. Neo’s status as the One has garnered a lot of attention over the years, and The Matrix 5 could clarify if the status was in effect all the time or not.

Matrix 5 Can Settle Whether Neo Was The One In Every Version Of The Matrix

It’s Unclear If Neo Was Always The One In The Matrix

It appears to many that Neo became the One when he died and came back to life in the first Matrix, but it isn’t clear if he was the One in every version of the Matrix. The Matrix 5 could explore this question, which is raised subtly in every movie in the franchise. In particular, although the Oracle tells Neo he is the One in The Matrix, the Architect (Helmut Bakaitis) shows Neo many versions of himself in The Matrix Reloaded, which somewhat confuses his status as the One. Others may have taken up the mantel before, or it has always been Neo.

Why The Architect Showed Neo Multiple Versions Of Him In Different Iterations

The Architect Wanted To Control Neo

The Architect from The Matrix Reloaded

Neo has to get through the Oracle and Keymaker (Randall Duk Kim) before he can find the Architect, and when he finally confronts him, he is shown how he is just one of many Neos. The Architect is trying to demonstrate to Neo that the One is just another system of control native to the Matrix, thereby breaking Neo’s spirit and forcing his hand. There were multiple versions of the One from what the Architect says — however, he could always have been lying. The Matrix 5 can expand on this curiosity.

Although it doesn’t seem that Neo was the One in every version of the Matrix, there are certainly ways in which he could have been. Neo’s powers often defied explanation. Yet the Oracle (recast as Mary Alice) backs up the Architect when Neo asks her why she hadn’t told him about the Ones before him. She answers that it wasn’t time for him to know yet. In light of the ongoing mystery, fans should be eagerly awaiting the next installment of The Matrix to see if this question is finally put to rest, perhaps through flashbacks or prequel storylines that explore other iterations of the Matrix.
