Disney’s Moana 2 included a big twist in its story that solidifies Moana as the most powerful and impressive Disney Princess ever created. Moana 2 broke multiple box office records, exceeding the box office intake of the original, and has been ranked as one of the highest-grossest movies of 2024. The ending of Moana 2 sees Moana succeeding in raising the island of Motufetu, but is killed in the process after being struck by Nalo’s lightning. A grief-stricken Maui summons the spirits of Moana’s ancestors, and they manage to restore her to life. But in a surprising twist, not only is she revived by her ancestors, but Moana is transformed into a demigod, complete with her own tattoos and her oar being turned into her own spiritual weapon, similar to Maui and his powerful fishhook. Moana’s transformation marks a new turn for Disney’s evolution of its princess characters.

Throughout the original movie, Moana showed her strength and courage as the daughter of the Chief of Montunui, and her strong connection with the ocean played a pivotal part in her journey to Te Fiti. Her transformation into a demigod in Moana 2 strengthens her bond with the ocean and serves as the basis of her demigod powers. Although the sequel ended before her new abilities could be explored, Moana’s demigod status in Moana 2 officially makes her the most powerful Disney princess ever created. Moana was widely acclaimed upon her debut and was praised by critics for staying true to her beliefs, her determination to achieve her goals, and for defying the original traditions of Disney Princesses by not needing a love interest. In 2019, Moana officially became the twelfth member of the Disney Princess franchise, and has been ranked as an inspiring role model for young viewers (via Parents). Moana already proved herself as a strong character in the first movie, but her demigod transformation in Moana 2 solidified her as the most powerful female Disney character ever, outranking all other Disney Princesses.

Moana is only the third Disney Princess to have supernatural abilities, after Rapunzel in Tangled and Elsa in Frozen, but her demigod status means she easily overpowers both. While Rapunzel’s hair gives her an element of power, she lacks the fighting skills. Meanwhile, while Elsa isn’t officially a Disney Princess, her ice powers and status as the fifth spirit in Frozen II come very close to matching Moana’s new abilities. The upcoming Frozen 3 could see a further development in Elsa’s powers, but it will take a lot to beat Moana’s new status as a demigod seen in Moana 2.
